Canmore or Jasper?
Our verdict in twelve categories, each scored against the same fixed benchmark cities, and the climate month by month, so you can choose for your trip.
Choose Canmore for
- day trips
- getting around
- live music and the arts
Canmore suits travellers who want the Rockies with a little more around them. Banff is twenty minutes up the valley and Calgary a little over an hour away, so a hiking or climbing trip can also take in museums, hot springs, a proper dinner or the August folk festival. A bus up the valley, a pool and climbing wall for wet days and easier outings make it the better base for families and for anyone who wants a few comforts.
Choose Jasper for
- beaches
Jasper is for the traveller who wants to be deep inside the park and stay there. The town is small and remote, wildlife lines the valley roads, the park is one of the largest dark-sky preserves in the world, and two shallow lakes near town warm up enough for a swim in July and August. It asks for a car and offers few distractions, which is exactly why people who want the wilderness choose it.

Beaches & swimming
Neither town is a swimming destination, but Jasper has the better summer dip. Lake Annette and Lake Edith are shallow, have small sandy beaches and picnic lawns, and warm up enough in July and August for a real swim with mountains all around.
Canmore's Quarry Lake sits right on the edge of town with a grassy shore, but its water stays cold even in July and depends on snowmelt. It is a quick plunge after a hike rather than an afternoon on the sand.
Food & drink
Canmore eats better. Alongside bakeries and brewpubs, a handful of more ambitious kitchens cook Alberta beef, game, bison and Pacific Northwest fish, and breakfast before a hike is a real pleasure. Banff's wider choice is twenty minutes away, and Calgary is close enough for a serious dinner.
Jasper has a short list of steak houses, pizza, a couple of Asian kitchens and a brewpub, with formal dinners in the resort lodges. Good tables fill up in summer, and with nowhere else nearby to eat, many visitors simply self-cater.
Culture & sights
Neither town has much to see. Canmore's story is coal mining, told by a small museum, miners' cottages and the old police barracks, plus the Nordic Centre built for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Jasper's is fur traders and the railway, seen in the 1914 stone and timber information centre, the heritage station and a totem pole.
The real difference is what lies nearby. From Canmore, Banff's museums and the Cave and Basin site are a short drive away. From Jasper, there is nothing comparable within an easy trip.
Nightlife
Both towns are quiet after dark. In Canmore the evening is a pint in a brewpub, sometimes with a band, among climbers and Calgary weekenders, and if you want a later night the bus runs to Banff's bars. Jasper has a late bar or two filled with seasonal staff, but its best night out is outdoors, looking at the stars in one of the world's largest dark-sky preserves.
Nature & outdoors
Both are among the finest mountain bases in North America. The difference is in character. Canmore suits active climbers and scramblers. Ha Ling Peak, the Three Sisters and Mount Rundle rise straight above the streets, Kananaskis Country offers quieter peaks to the south, and Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are up the valley.
Jasper sits inside a vast park, and the wildlife is richer, with mountain goats, caribou and wolves sometimes seen along the roads. Maligne Canyon, Maligne Lake, Mount Edith Cavell and the Whistlers tramway are all close, and the Columbia Icefield lies to the south on the Icefields Parkway, which links the two towns.
Day trips
Canmore is much better placed for outings. Banff is twenty minutes away for its hot springs, Whyte Museum and the Banff Springs hotel, and Calgary, a little over an hour east, has Heritage Park, museums and the July Stampede. Lake Louise and the railway town of Field make smaller stops.
From Jasper, almost every outing goes deeper into the park. Hinton and Valemount are working towns with little to see, and Banff is too far for an easy return in a day.
Good for families
Canmore makes life with children simpler. Paved riverside paths suit pushchairs, walks to Grassi Lakes are short enough for small legs, and the recreation centre's pool and climbing wall cover wet days. In winter there is sledding and skating, and Calgary is close if the children want a zoo.
Jasper charms children with elk and bears seen from the car, the bridges over Maligne Canyon and summer paddling at the lake beaches, and camping is a classic way to stay. The main sights involve long, winding drives, though, so it suits children who are old enough to enjoy them.
Getting around
Canmore is far easier without a car. Local buses run around town, a regional bus goes up the valley to Banff and continues towards Lake Louise, and seasonal shuttles serve the busiest lakes. You still need to drive to reach Kananaskis and many trailheads.
Jasper can be reached by transcontinental train, and the town itself is a few walkable blocks. Beyond that there is no regular public transport, only seasonal shuttles and tours, so without a car you see the town rather than the park.
Shopping & style
Shopping is a minor part of either trip, though Canmore's Main Street offers more, with outdoor outfitters, galleries selling mountain landscapes and Indigenous work, and Calgary's stores an hour away. Jasper's two main streets cover gear rentals, plush bears and wildlife photography, and little else.
Affordability
Both are expensive, with resort-priced rooms, a park pass and usually a hire car. Canmore has more self-catering condos, and spring and late autumn bring real savings. In Jasper, the limited supply of rooms in a small park town pushes up summer prices, and campgrounds and winter stays are the usual ways to save.
Live music & performing arts
Canmore has something to offer here and Jasper hardly anything. The Canmore Folk Music Festival, one of Canada's oldest, fills a riverside park over the August long weekend, the town's arts centre stages concerts and theatre, and the Banff Centre up the valley adds classical music and the Mountain Film Festival.
In Jasper, live performance means a guitarist in a pub on some evenings and a few events during the seasonal festivals.
Wellness & relaxation
Canmore has more ways to unwind. The Upper Hot Springs on Sulphur Mountain are about half an hour away and the Kananaskis Nordic spa's outdoor hot and cold pools sit beneath the peaks, with yoga studios and massage in town.
Jasper's Miette Hot Springs are the hottest in the Canadian Rockies, but they are an hour's drive away and open only in the warmer months, so lodge spas fill the rest of the year. Its stronger appeal is stillness, with mornings without traffic and very dark night skies.
When should you go?
Pick your month. The climate figures are measured averages, not a forecast.

Temperature and rainfall are climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Canmore: 1991-2020 normals, Banff (18.1 km from centre). Jasper: 1991-2020 normals, Jasper Warden (7.2 km from centre).
The two towns follow almost the same year. Both are below freezing from December to February, which is ski, snowshoe and frozen-canyon season rather than weather for idle strolling. Spring comes slowly, and June is the wettest month in both, a little wetter in Canmore at about 66mm. July and August are the warm heart of the year, with afternoons around 23°C to 24°C. That is when Jasper's lakes are pleasant for a swim, while Canmore's water stays cold even then.
September is the best month for walking in either town, still mild at around 17°C to 18°C and drier than early summer, and in Canmore it brings the golden larches. Jasper runs a degree or two warmer through the summer and is slightly drier for most of the year. By November both are back near freezing.
Which traveller are you?
On a family trip with children, Canmore is the easier choice. Riverside paths suit pushchairs and bikes, Grassi Lakes is a short walk with a reward at the end, and the recreation centre's pool and climbing wall rescue rainy days. Jasper's sights mean longer drives.
For a beach and sun trip in high summer, Jasper wins. Lake Annette and Lake Edith have small sandy beaches and water warm enough for a proper swim in July and August, while Canmore's Quarry Lake stays bracing even in midsummer.
On a relaxing and wellness trip, Canmore has more to offer. Banff's Upper Hot Springs and a Nordic-style spa in Kananaskis are both within easy reach, whereas Jasper's Miette Hot Springs is an hour's drive and open only in the warmer months.
