The verdict
Choose Monaco if you want the sights packed close together, walkable from the centre in an afternoon, with the sea at the door and little appetite for late nights.
Choose Nice if you want range: many more restaurants and kitchens near the centre, far more bars and clubs, somewhat more museums, more park space, and 70 beaches to choose from rather than 50.

Where they differ
Monaco has about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre as Nice, so a day on foot covers more. It also has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, useful with children.
Nice has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a far wider range of kitchens, many times as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs, most of them central. It also has somewhat more museums and about three times as much park space.
Where they are alike
Beaches and swimming come out level. The sea is 0km from Monaco's centre and 1km from Nice's, the swimming season runs the same length in both, and the water peaks at the same 25°C.
Year-round weather is identical too, the same warm dry summers and the same wet late autumn. Around both, 24% of the land is protected, and both have 3 theme parks within reach, so countryside days and family outings work out much the same.
Which traveller are you?
A couple after food and late evenings should take Nice: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a far wider range of kitchens, many times as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs.
A visitor with two or three days and no car should take Monaco: about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, though the museum offering is the smaller of the two.
Families do moderately in both. Monaco has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre; Nice has about three times as much park space, and both have 3 theme parks within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The data carries a daily budget for Nice but none for Monaco, so the two cannot be compared on cost here at all. Nothing in these figures tells you whether a day in Monaco costs more, less or the same, and that absence is a gap in the source rather than a sign that the two are alike.
The shared beach and weather record rests on a narrow summer. November brings 138mm of rain, and the warmest sea comes in August, which is also when the coast is at its busiest, so Nice's 70 beaches will feel fewer than the count suggests.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre). Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre).
The two share the same climate, so the calendar is the same either way. July and August are the warmest and driest, 28°C by day, sea at 24-25°C and only 13-18mm of rain; Monaco suits that stretch, since its sights are walkable in the heat.
June is the better compromise, 25°C and 34mm, before peak crowds. October and November are the wettest at 124-138mm, when Nice's museums and indoor tables matter more than the sea.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
