The verdict

Choose Biarritz if you want a small coastal town where the trip is built around the water, with the sea 1km from the centre and little competition from bars, museums or crowds.

Choose Nice if you want the eating, the going out and the walkable sights, plus a longer swimming season: the sea holds 21°C or more for 4 months there, against two in Biarritz.

Where they differ

Nice has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, along with many times as many bars and clubs, most of them close in. It also has the better hinterland: 24% of the surrounding land is protected against 6% around Biarritz, and about twice as much park space near the centre.

Biarritz leads on none of these. Its case is scale: a town of 26,200 people against 358,000, 43 beaches, the sea 1km from the centre and far less to distract from it.

Where they are alike

Both are seaside places first. The sea is 1km from either centre, both have a long list of beaches to choose between, and in both the water is at its warmest in August.

Their calendars also run in step. January is the coolest month in each, topping out at 13°C, and the warm season peaks in the same late-summer weeks. Neither is built around children either: attractions and theme parks are limited in both, and Nice's advantage there is modest.

Which traveller are you?

Someone who plans days around eating and going out should take Nice: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, nearly all within walking distance.

A swimmer or surfer who wants a small town should take Biarritz: 43 beaches and the sea 1km from the centre, in a place a fraction of the size of Nice.

Families and day-trippers are better served in Nice: 3 theme parks within reach against 1, about twice the park space near the centre, and 24% of the surrounding land protected for trips out of town.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. It is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €160 a day beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here tells you which is the cheaper trip.

The beach and weather figures hide timing. Nice's dry, warm midsummer is exactly when a city of that size draws its heaviest crowds onto its beaches, while Biarritz's quieter months are its wettest: November alone brings 224mm, so the calm is bought with rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Biarritz: 1991-2020 normals, San Sebastian / Fuenterrabia (24.4 km from centre). Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Biarritz is at its best in July and August, with highs of 25-26°C and sea at 21-22°C. Even then the rain does not stop: the driest month brings 97mm, and November reaches 224mm, so late autumn is no beach trip.

Nice holds a usable season from June to September, with July and August at 28°C and the sea reaching 25°C. Midsummer there is genuinely dry, 13-18mm, though October and November turn wet and the advantage disappears.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
