The verdict

Choose Bangkok if you want reliable heat, with highs of 32-36°C in every month, the wider choice of bars and clubs and more museums, and you are content to sightsee without swimming.

Choose Hong Kong if you want the sea at the edge of the city, with 65 beaches within reach, a centre whose sights sit close together, and cooler winter days.

Where they differ

Bangkok has about twice as many places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs as Hong Kong, roughly half of them near the centre, and about twice as many museums. It is also warm whatever month you land, with daytime highs of 32-36°C.

Hong Kong puts you on the water: the sea starts at the centre, with 65 beaches nearby, where Bangkok's coast is 23km out and has none. Its centre also holds about three times as many notable places within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Families find much the same in both: a comparable number of attractions near the centre, and theme parks in similar numbers, 5 in Hong Kong against 4 in Bangkok, though Hong Kong has more park space close in.

Eating out is a reason to go in either, with about as many restaurants near the centre in each and Hong Kong covering a wider range of kitchens. And in both, about half the drinking places sit near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

For a traveller whose evening matters most, Bangkok: about twice as many bars and about twice as many nightclubs as Hong Kong, half of them near the centre, and restaurants in comparable numbers to Hong Kong's.

If swimming is part of the trip, Hong Kong: the sea begins at the centre and 65 beaches sit within reach, where Bangkok's coast is 23km out with none nearby.

For a short stay on foot, or with children, Hong Kong again: about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, more park space close in, and 5 theme parks against Bangkok's 4.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries no daily budget figure for either city, so nothing in it tells you which trip works out cheaper; the value reading rests on a different measure entirely, and should not be read as a price.

Hong Kong's beaches read better than they swim: the sea is 21°C or warmer in only 8 months, and the warmest of those are also the wettest. Bangkok's year-round warmth cuts the other way, with April highs of 36°C and rain over half the year.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Hong Kong: 1991-2020 normals, King's Park (4.4 km from centre). Bangkok: 1991-2020 normals, Bangkok (5.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bangkok is at its best from December to February, when highs sit at 32-34°C and rainfall stays at 7-22mm. The middle of the year is persistently wet, though the sea stays warm enough for swimming in every month.

Hong Kong is the better pick in October and November, when highs are 25-28°C and rain eases to 36-92mm. Midsummer there is far wetter than Bangkok's, peaking at 381-493mm, and January days reach only 19°C, which suits walking more than swimming.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
