The verdict

Choose Annecy if you want the countryside to be the point of the trip: 20% of the land around it is protected, and it has 9 beaches nearby rather than one.

Choose Toulouse if you want a city on foot: far more restaurants, museums and bars near the centre, more tourist attractions for children, a milder winter and a drier summer.

Where they differ

Annecy leads on nature and day trips: 20% of the land around it is protected against 1% around Toulouse, it has 9 beaches nearby against Toulouse's 1, and 3 theme parks within reach against 2.

Toulouse is the stronger base for city days and for families: many times as many tourist attractions and notable places within walking distance of the centre, about three times as many restaurants with a much wider range of kitchens, and many more museums, set tightly around the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither city offers sea swimming: no sea temperature is recorded for either, and neither has a month of water at 21°C or more. Whatever swimming there is happens away from a coast.

The weather follows the same calendar, with January the coolest month in both and summer highs of 27°C in Annecy and 29°C in Toulouse, on similar annual sunshine near 1,900-2,100 hours. Both also have about the same amount of park space near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

Someone who wants days out of the city: Annecy. 20% of the land around it is protected against 1% around Toulouse, and the beaches and theme parks nearby give a week's worth of trips out.

A family with children: Toulouse, mainly for the number of tourist attractions within reach of the centre. Annecy counters with 3 theme parks against 2 and about the same park space, so it is not a clean win.

Anyone travelling for eating, museums and evenings out: Toulouse. About three times as many restaurants and a wider range of kitchens, many more museums, and far more bars and clubs, most of them near the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information: the figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction. The €160 daily budget beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either city, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a difference.

Annecy's outdoor advantage comes with the wetter calendar: no month falls below 55mm, and September to December sit at 87-94mm, so the protected land and the beaches are not equally usable year-round. No sea temperature is recorded for either city, so the beach count says nothing about when the water is warm enough.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Annecy: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (39 km from centre). Toulouse: 1991-2020 normals, Toulouse / Blagnac (7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Annecy is at its best from June to August, with highs of 24-27°C. Rain does not let up in summer, at 77-81mm a month, and autumn is wetter still, near 94mm in October; with January highs of 5°C, winter is a limited proposition.

Toulouse holds up longer. July to September brings 25-29°C and the driest stretch of the year, 40-46mm a month, and October still reaches 20°C. Winter highs near 10°C and 37-53mm of rain make it the better off-season choice.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
