The verdict

Choose Avignon if you want a heritage trip on foot with countryside around it: more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, museums set tightly around the centre, and more protected land nearby. Swimming is not part of the offer.

Choose Monaco if the sea matters: 50 beaches nearby, four months of water at 21°C or more, and far more to see within walking distance of the centre.

Where they differ

Avignon's strength is heritage with reach: 6 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip range against Monaco's 2, and its museums sit tightly around the centre, so a short stay on foot covers most of them.

Monaco has the coast: 50 beaches nearby against Avignon's 1, and 4 months of sea at 21°C or more where Avignon has none. It also packs about three times as many notable places into walking distance of the centre, and holds somewhat more museums.

Where they are alike

Both are warm-weather cities across the year, Avignon at 11-31°C and Monaco at 13-28°C, with mild winters, long sunshine and no month that is genuinely cold.

They also converge on eating out, families and going out after dark: a similar range of kitchens, about as many tourist attractions near the centre in each, and limited nightlife where, in both, the bars and clubs sit close to the centre rather than scattered.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling with children: Avignon has about twice as much park space near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against Monaco's 3, with similar numbers of attractions. Monaco leads only if the trip is built around swimming.

A heritage traveller: Avignon, with 6 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach and 36% of the surrounding land protected against 24%, suits walking days in town followed by trips out.

A short-break visitor with two days and no car: Monaco, where roughly three times as many notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and the beaches fall inside that same short radius.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The data gives Avignon a daily budget of about €160 but carries no equivalent figure for Monaco, so nothing on this page tells you what the trip costs there, in either direction.

The beach figures count what is nearby rather than what sits inside the city, and the months when the sea is warmest are the months everyone else picks. Read the weather the same way: Avignon's summer highs of 31°C arrive without a coast to cool off in, and both cities take their heaviest rain in autumn, when prices and crowds are otherwise easiest.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Avignon: 1991-2020 normals, Nimes / Courbessac (34 km from centre). Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Late spring suits Avignon best: May and June bring highs of 24-28°C with moderate rain, and the country around it is open. Midsummer climbs to 31°C with no sea to retreat to, and September turns wet at 111mm.

Monaco's window is July and August: highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C and rain down to 13-18mm, the driest stretch of its year. Late autumn is the trade-off, when it takes noticeably heavier rain than Avignon.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
