The verdict

Choose Belfast if you want the outdoors within easy reach: protected countryside around the city, 10 beaches nearby and the sea 1km from the centre, in the sunnier of the two over a year.

Choose Glasgow if the city itself is the trip: twice the museums, far more bars and clubs, and more to see on foot near the centre.

Where they differ

Belfast is the better base for time outside the city: a slightly larger share of the surrounding land is protected, 19% against 16%, there is more park space near the centre, and the sea is 1km away against 3km in Glasgow, with 10 beaches nearby against 3.

Glasgow holds the indoor half. It has about twice as many museums, grouped tightly around the centre, and 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1. It also has roughly twice the places to drink and three times the nightclubs, mostly central.

Where they are alike

Eating out is where the two sit closest. Glasgow has more restaurants near its centre, but both draw on a similar range of kitchens, so the choice of cuisine is not what separates them.

The other near-matches are families and weather. Each has park space near the centre and theme parks within reach, and both run daytime highs of about 7-19°C across the year, with no month in either at 40mm of rain or less.

Which traveller are you?

Nights out and gallery days: Glasgow. It has roughly twice the places to drink and three times the nightclubs of Belfast, most of them central, plus twice the museums and more notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Families: Belfast. More tourist attractions and more park space near the centre, 2 theme parks within reach against Glasgow's 1, and 10 beaches close enough for an afternoon rather than a full day out.

Walkers and day-trippers: Belfast again. 19% of the land around it is protected against 16% around Glasgow, the parks are closer in, and the coast starts 1km from the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

Treat the value comparison as empty. It rests on a national price level, identical for both cities by construction, and the dataset carries no daily budget for either, so there is no basis here for saying which trip costs more. Judge them on everything else.

Belfast's coastal edge is about access rather than swimming: the sea starts 1km from the centre, but neither city has a month with water at 21°C or more, and both peak at 14-15°C. The months that rank best in Belfast are also not its driest, so a good summer week still assumes rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Belfast: 1991-2020 normals, Belfast / Aldergrove Airport (19.4 km from centre). Glasgow: 1991-2020 normals, Glasgow Airport (11.5 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Belfast is the better bet from May to September. Highs run 15-19°C, rain sits at 55-67mm, dry by its own standards, and the sea is at its warmest, 14°C, at the end of that run. Autumn and winter turn wet, so the case thins quickly afterwards.

Glasgow reaches the same 19°C in July but pays for it in rain, 129-145mm in high summer. Its steadier stretch is April to June, at 102-111mm; winter is far wetter, and no month there is dry.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
