Where they differ

Bucharest is the greener of the two: 4% of the surrounding land is protected against 1% around Istanbul, and it has more park space near the centre. Its restaurant list is shorter, but it covers a wider range of kitchens.

Istanbul packs about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre and about twice the museums, with one UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach. It also has roughly three times as many nightclubs, and three months of sea at 21°C or more make swimming realistic.

Where they are alike

Families are the closest call. Both have 2 theme parks within reach, and both put a good deal within a short trip from the centre: Istanbul through attractions aimed at visitors, Bucharest through parks and green space.

Eating out and cost are close too. Istanbul has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, while Bucharest's kitchens cover more ground, and the national budget estimates behind the two, €99 for Romania and €100 for Turkey, are near identical.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller after museums, heritage and streets where the notable places sit close together should take Istanbul: about twice the museums, and the only UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach of either city.

Families with young children can use either, since both have 2 theme parks within reach, but Bucharest gives more park space near the centre and more protected countryside for a day out.

Anyone building a trip around late nights and swimming wants Istanbul: roughly three times as many nightclubs, and sea at 21-24°C in high summer. Bucharest offers neither, though its summer heat is the greater of the two.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €99 for Romania and €100 for Turkey, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit well above its own country average, and that gap can be larger than the one between the two national figures, so the near-identical numbers tell you nothing about which trip costs more.

Warm months are not dry months. Bucharest's strongest stretch includes its wettest weather, near 71-82mm a month in late spring, and Istanbul's sea only clears swimming temperature for three months, either side of which the rain returns.

Bucharest is at its best from May to September. Late spring is the wettest part of that window, near 71-82mm a month, while August is drier at 48mm and reaches 31°C. Winter is the clear weak point.

Istanbul holds a longer dry stretch, with highs of 26-30°C from June to September on 23-43mm of rain a month, and sea warm enough to swim at 21-24°C. Then the rain returns, up to 101mm in December.
