The verdict

Choose Catania if you want to swim: it has 5 months of sea at 21°C or more, plus the wider choice of restaurants, bars and clubs and a denser cluster of museums and sights near the centre.

Choose Como if the point of the trip is the landscape: more protected land around it, more park space near the centre and more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Where they differ

Catania has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a far wider range of kitchens, plus roughly three times as many places to drink and many more nightclubs. Its sea sits at 21°C or above for 5 months, reaching 26°C in August; Como has no such month.

Como is the stronger base for getting out of town: 23% of the surrounding land is protected against 10% around Catania, there is more park space near the centre, and 8 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against Catania's 3.

Where they are alike

Both are compact. The places worth seeing cluster within walking distance of the centre in each, Catania with about twice as many, so neither trip depends on transport to fill a day on foot.

Both also offer something beyond the streets: protected countryside around each, UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach of both, and museums in each centre, though Catania has about three times as many.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming is the reason for the trip, only Catania delivers: sea at 21°C or above for 5 months, and beaches close to the city. Como has more beaches nearby, but the water never reaches that.

Walkers and day-trippers are better served by Como, with 23% of the surrounding land protected, more park space near the centre and 8 UNESCO-listed places within reach for days spent outside the town.

Families will find more to fill a day in Catania: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, and 1 theme park within reach where Como has none. Como offers park space and little else aimed at children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure here is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which of the two costs less; the €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Treat the comparison as carrying no information.

Como's beach count reads better than it lives: more places to swim than Catania, but no month warms the water to 21°C, and its warmest months are also among its wettest, at 158-172mm. Catania's hottest weeks are nearly rainless but climb above 34°C, which is a different trip from spring.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

WorseBetter

Catania is at its best in May: highs of 26°C and 18mm of rain. April and October are close behind, and October still has warm sea. July and August are near-dry at 9mm but hot, 34-35°C. November and December turn wet, 71-83mm.

Como's window is narrower: July and August at 27°C are the warmest, though each brings about 158mm of rain, and June is wetter at 172mm. The driest months, January to March at 61-76mm, are also the coldest, with highs of 7-14°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
