Where they differ
Como has about twice as many museums as Interlaken and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2, with museums and roughly twice as many walkable notable places clustered around the centre. It also has many times as many places to drink.
Interlaken counters with about three times as many nightclubs and a much wider range of kitchens, though Como keeps roughly twice as many restaurants near its centre. The national daily budget estimate is €155 for Como's country against €248 for Interlaken's.
Where they are alike
Neither city offers sea swimming, and neither has a month of water at 21°C or more. Both have lake beaches close by, 12 near Interlaken and 8 near Como, best treated as a warm-day extra.
They also land close on families, weather and eating. Neither has a theme park within reach: Interlaken has more tourist attractions near the centre, Como more park space. Both follow the same seasonal shape, and both centres have a workable spread of restaurants.
Which traveller are you?
If museums and heritage are the point, Como is the pick: about twice as many museums as Interlaken, tightly grouped around the centre, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2.
Families with children will find more to do close to base in Interlaken, which has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre. Neither has a theme park within reach, so plan around the outdoors.
Walkers and day-trippers are better served from Como: 23% of the surrounding land is protected against 19% around Interlaken, and there is roughly three times as much park space near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €248, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A small lakeside town and a resort town can each sit far from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two, so read them as background, not as the cost of your trip.
No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that series is missing rather than low, and its monthly ratings rest on temperature and rainfall alone. That side of the weather comparison is unmeasured.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre).
Como is the better bet either side of winter: January highs of 7°C against 3°C, and 61-76mm across February and March. Summer is warmer, 25-27°C from June to August, but wet, with 158-172mm a month.
Interlaken's window runs April to September. April brings 15°C with 34mm, September 18°C with 38mm, and July peaks at 24°C. Even the wettest summer months stay near 61-62mm, so rain breaks fewer days than in Como.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
