The verdict
Choose Como if the surroundings matter more than the city itself: 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 3, protected countryside around the town, and milder winter days.
Choose Ljubljana if you want the city to carry the trip: far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and about twice as many places to drink.

Where they differ
Como matches Ljubljana for restaurants near the centre despite being much the smaller place, and its strength points outward: 23% of the land around it is protected against 13%, and 8 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against 3.
Ljubljana packs more into the centre: many times as many notable places within walking distance, about twice as many tourist attractions, a much wider range of kitchens, and about twice as many places to drink plus many more nightclubs. Park space near the centre is far greater too.
Where they are alike
Nature and day trips come out level, by different routes. Como is ringed by protected countryside, 23% of the land against 13%, while Ljubljana's green space sits near the centre in far greater quantity.
The rest of the close ground: both have museums and heritage worth a day, both see rain in every month, with none at 40mm or less, and neither offers sea swimming, with no month of water at 21°C or more.
Which traveller are you?
The city walker who wants everything in reach: Ljubljana. Far more notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and the range of kitchens is wider, so evenings need little planning.
Families: Ljubljana again, with about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and much more park space to break up a day. Neither city has a theme park within reach, so expect walking and open ground.
Anyone building the trip around days out and countryside: Como. 23% of the land around it is protected, and 8 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against Ljubljana's 3.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget, €155 on the Italian side and €131 on the Slovenian, is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited town and a capital both sit some way from their own country's average, and that gap can be wider than the gap between the two figures, so it says little about what either place will cost you.
Beach counts mislead here too: both list places to swim nearby, but neither has a month of water at 21°C or more. Summer is also among the wettest time of year, particularly in Como.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre).
Como is the steadier choice outside high summer. October highs near 17°C and January at 7°C rather than 4°C make the cool half of the year more workable. Late spring is its soggiest stretch, near 178mm in May.
Ljubljana is the better summer pick: June to August is warm at 26-28°C and drier then than Como, around 121-126mm against 158-172mm. Autumn turns wet in both, and neither is dry at any point in the year.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
