The verdict
Choose Como if you want a compact place where sights and museums sit close together, with UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and swimming is not part of the plan.
Choose Nice if the sea matters: 70 beaches nearby and four months of sea at 21°C or more, plus a much wider choice of restaurants and more going on after dark.

Where they differ
Como keeps things concentrated: its museums sit tightly around the centre, it has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre as Nice, and 8 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against Nice's 2.
Nice is the stronger base for eating out, with many times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, and for going out afterwards, with roughly twice the drinking places and far more clubs. It also has 70 beaches nearby against Como's 8, and warmer, drier weather.
Where they are alike
Museums and heritage land in the same place for both. Nice holds about three times as many museums, but Como's cluster tightly around the centre and its day-trip range covers 8 UNESCO-listed places against Nice's 2, so either gives you a few days of indoor sightseeing.
Neither is built around families: Como has more tourist attractions near the centre, Nice has 3 theme parks. The national daily budgets are close too, €155 in Italy and €160 in France.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone whose trip revolves around swimming should go to Nice: 70 beaches nearby, sea reaching 24-25°C and four months at 21°C or more. Como has a handful of beaches and no warm sea season at all.
A traveller after heritage will find Como's museums packed close around the centre and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, four times Nice's tally. Nice holds more museums, but they are spread further out.
If evenings matter, take Nice: many more restaurants and a wider spread of kitchens, roughly twice the drinking places and far more clubs, most of them near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget is a national estimate for Italy and France, the price level for restaurants and hotels, not a measurement of Como or Nice. The gap between them is small, and how far a heavily visited city sits from its own country's average can be larger, so neither figure tells you what your trip will cost.
Warm and dry are not the same here. Como's best months for warmth are also its wettest, at 158-172mm, and Nice's sea stays above 20°C into October and November, the two wettest months of its year.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre).
Como is worth the trip from June to August, when highs reach 25-27°C. Rain is the catch: each of those months brings 158-172mm, and May is wetter still at 178mm, so pack for showers whatever the warmth.
Nice works over a longer stretch. July is its driest month at 13mm, with highs near 28°C and the sea at its warmest, 24-25°C. October and November are the ones to avoid, the wettest of its year, though days stay mild.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
