Where they differ

Genoa has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, many more places to drink and roughly twice as many nightclubs, most of them central. It also has about twice as many museums, sitting tightly around the centre, so a heritage day needs little travel.

Monaco is the better base for day trips: 24% of the land around it is protected against 8% around Genoa, with 2 UNESCO-listed places within reach against 1. Genoa keeps more park space near its own centre.

Where they are alike

Swimming is what they share most exactly: the sea starts at the centre of both, Monaco with 50 beaches nearby and Genoa 37, and the same run of months with the sea at 21°C or more.

The weather runs almost in parallel through the year, with three months at 40mm of rain or less in each. Both centres are compact enough to cover on foot, and neither is strong on attractions aimed at children.

Which traveller are you?

If your trip is built around eating out and long evenings, take Genoa: roughly three times as many restaurants near the centre, many more places to drink, and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them walkable.

For museums and a dense old core, Genoa again holds about twice as many museums, tightly grouped. Monaco answers with somewhat more notable places within walking distance and much quieter streets after dark.

Travelling with children, Monaco has 3 theme parks within reach where Genoa has none, and 24% of its surrounding land protected. Genoa counters with more park space near the centre and more attractions overall.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. Genoa's daily budget of about €155 has no counterpart for Monaco in this data, so nothing in these figures tells you whether one is dearer than the other. Treat the money side as unanswered rather than equal.

The beach picture is equally strong for both, but it is seasonal, and the warm-sea months are also the busiest. The sea is still 20°C in October, when rainfall is at its highest in both, above 100mm. A warm sea and a usable day are not the same thing.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre). Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Both peak together in high summer, so the difference sits in the shoulders. Genoa is the drier autumn: October and November run near 101mm and 122mm against Monaco's 124mm and 138mm, and the sea still holds 23°C in September, when Genoa's rain is lighter too.

Monaco has the slight edge at the top of summer, with 28°C days in July and just 13mm of rain, and its winter days are marginally milder, though January arrives wetter than Genoa's. Neither is a swimming trip outside the warm-sea run.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
