The verdict
Choose Genoa if you want the trip to happen mostly on foot: a dense centre of notable places, a much wider choice of restaurants and somewhere to go after dinner.
Choose La Spezia if the point is what lies outside the town, with more protected land around it and two UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and if you would rather have quiet evenings.

Where they differ
Genoa puts most of a trip within walking distance: many times as many notable places near the centre as La Spezia, about three times as many restaurants and a wider range of kitchens, and about three times as many places to drink, plus far more clubs.
La Spezia leans outward instead. 13% of the land around it is protected against 8% around Genoa, and it has 2 theme parks within reach where Genoa has none, though the town itself gives you little to walk between.
Where they are alike
Both sit on the water: the sea is 0km from either centre, with 37 beaches around Genoa and 32 around La Spezia, and each has 4 months when the sea holds 21°C or more.
The weather follows the same pattern in both, warm and dry through summer, wet in late autumn, with similar sunshine across the year. Both also have museums and heritage in the mix, though Genoa carries far more of them.
Which traveller are you?
If your days are spent walking between places to eat, museums and somewhere to drink afterwards, Genoa is the one: the choice near the centre is several times wider on each count.
If the walking happens outside the town, on protected land and towards UNESCO-listed places, La Spezia is built for that, provided you have transport and travel in the drier months.
Families are better served in Genoa, which has many times as many attractions near the centre and more park space close by, although La Spezia counters with 2 theme parks within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information: both rest on the same national price level, so it cannot tell you which city costs more, and the €155 a day beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either place.
The two stand level on beaches, but that rests on counts and on a sea that peaks in the same August weeks in both, when the coast is busiest. And La Spezia's strength lies in the land around it, not in the town, so it depends on transport and on the drier months; that ground is less usable once autumn rain sets in.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre). La Spezia: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (64.8 km from centre).
Genoa is the drier bet in high summer: 12mm in July against La Spezia's 32mm, with days at 27-28°C and the sea near its warmest for swimming. September still reaches 25°C by day, though the rain has returned by then.
La Spezia runs warmer, up to 30°C at the peak, and its window for the country around it is May and June, before the heat sets in. It is the wetter of the two in most months, and from October both pass 100mm, which shuts that ground down.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
