Where they are alike

Nightlife lands in much the same place: a comparable number of places to drink in each, clustered near the centre in both, so an evening out means walking rather than travelling.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, €180 for Ghent's country and €181 for Rotterdam's, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so a near-identical pair says nothing about which trip will cost you more.

Rotterdam's beach advantage assumes a trip out of the city: the sea is 24km from the centre, and at its warmest it reaches 19°C, so neither city offers water many people would swim in for long.
