Where they differ
Antalya is the swimming choice. The sea is 1km from both centres, but Antalya has 11 beaches nearby against Izmir's 4, and 7 months of sea at 21°C or warmer against 5. It also has more country to get out into, with 8% of the surrounding land protected against 4%.
Izmir works better on foot. It has many times as many museums, and about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre. Restaurants sit more thickly near the middle, and most of its nightclubs are central, against about half in Antalya.
Where they are alike
The shape of the year is close to identical. Antalya runs 15-35°C across the months against Izmir's 13-34°C, both with dry summers and wet winters, and both with close to 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.
They are also matched at table and after dark: a similar range of kitchens, about the same number of places to drink, and comparable park space and attractions near the centre for a day out with children.
Which traveller are you?
Families wanting beach days: Antalya. It has 5 theme parks within reach against Izmir's 2, sea at 21°C or more for 7 months, and beaches spread along the coast rather than concentrated in a handful of spots.
Museum-goers and city walkers: Izmir. Many times as many museums, and roughly twice as many notable places inside a walkable radius of the centre, so a long weekend needs less transport and less planning.
Anyone drawn to days out of town: Antalya. Twice the share of protected land around the city, which means more choice of countryside excursions, though park space in the centre itself is much the same in both.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €100 a day quoted beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Neither is the cheaper trip on this evidence.
Similar year-round weather also hides two different winters. Antalya's extra warmth comes with 273mm of rain in December, far more than Izmir sees, and its warmest sea arrives in the same weeks as 35°C daytime highs, which is a lot of heat for sightseeing away from the water.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Izmir: 1991-2020 normals, Izmir (3.4 km from centre). Antalya: 1991-2020 normals, Antalya (23.4 km from centre).
May and June are Antalya's strongest window, with highs climbing from 26°C to 31°C and rainfall falling to 8mm. The sea stays at 21°C or warmer well into autumn, so late-season swimming still works. December is the month to avoid, at 273mm.
Izmir is the better pick for autumn on foot: September holds 29°C with only 22mm of rain, and October stays comfortable for walking. Its winters are wet too, but nothing like Antalya's, so a cool-season city break suffers less.
