The verdict

Choose Bodrum if the trip is built around swimming: the sea starts at the edge of the centre, with 30 beaches close by, and September is reliably warm and dry.

Choose Izmir if you want a city to walk: more museums, more notable places packed close together and a deeper choice of bars and clubs, with beach time as an occasional add-on rather than the point of the week.

Where they differ

Bodrum puts the sea at the centre: the water is 0km from the middle of town and there are around 30 beaches nearby against Izmir's 4. Its museums sit tightly around the centre, so what heritage there is comes easily on foot.

Izmir has many times as many museums, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, so a day without a car goes further. It also has roughly twice as many places to drink and somewhat more nightclubs.

Where they are alike

Eating out lands in much the same place. Izmir has about twice as many restaurants near the centre; Bodrum spreads across a wider range of kitchens. The count differs, the choice on any given evening rather less.

Weather and days out are close too. Both get five months with 40mm of rain or less. Protected land is 5% around Bodrum and 4% around Izmir, and neither has a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, so excursions stay local in both.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers: Bodrum. The water is 0km from the centre and there are 30 beaches within reach against a handful around Izmir, so days can be planned around which shore rather than how to get there.

Museum-goers and city walkers: Izmir. Many times as many museums, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance, mean a long weekend on foot without repeating yourself. Nightlife runs deeper too.

Families: Izmir for park space near the centre and 2 theme parks against Bodrum's 1. Bodrum suits older children who swim, since it has about three times as many tourist attractions close to the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it carries no information at all about which of these two costs less. The daily budget of around €100 is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city, so read it as a rough scale for the country.

No weather station near Bodrum records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low; its monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone, and the two cannot be compared on sunshine. Note too that 30 beaches is a count, not a measure of how busy they are in August.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bodrum: 1993-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Kos Airport (42.7 km from centre). Izmir: 1991-2020 normals, Izmir (3.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bodrum's strongest month is September: highs near 28°C, sea at 24°C and 12mm of rain. May and June work almost as well, warm and already dry after the winter.

Izmir is at its best in May, around 27°C with 33mm, and again in September. Midsummer pushes to 34°C against Bodrum's 31°C, which tells against walking a large city. Winter is wet in both, and wetter in Bodrum, so neither is a comfortable off-season choice.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
