What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €160, are national price levels for Germany and Austria, not measurements of either city. They sit close enough together to say nothing about which of the two cities costs more, and a heavily visited city can sit well above its own country's average.

Warm does not mean dry. Salzburg's July and August highs match Nuremberg's, yet those are its wettest months, near 160mm each, so warm weather there comes with a real chance of lost afternoons. The beaches counted near both cities are inland freshwater, and neither offers sea swimming.
