Where they differ

Alicante is the better coast. It has 33 beaches nearby against Barcelona's 20, the sea sits closer to the centre, and the water stays swimmable for longer. It also runs warmer through the year, with highs of 17-31°C against 14-29°C, and is drier month for month.

Barcelona is the denser city: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, many times as many museums, and many times as many bars and clubs. It also has 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Alicante's 2.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a base for wild country. About 10% of the land around Barcelona is protected and 7% around Alicante, so day trips lean on what is within reach rather than on large protected landscapes, and both keep park space near the centre.

Both also work as summer beach cities: the sea is within 1-2km of the centre in each, both are warmest in August, and in both the water peaks at 25-26°C that month.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers and sun-seekers: Alicante. More beaches within reach, water above 21°C for five months of the year against three, and days that stay usable well into October, in a city where the coast carries the trip.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. It is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €122 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here says which is the cheaper trip.

Alicante's beach strength counts 33 beaches; it says nothing about how full they are in August, which is both the warmest month at 31°C and the peak of the season. The same applies to counts of restaurants, bars and museums in Barcelona: they measure supply near the centre, not queues, and the warmest, driest months are the ones everyone else travels in too.

Alicante is the better choice outside high summer. May and June bring highs of 24-28°C with rainfall under 25mm, and winter days hold at 17-18°C while Barcelona sits nearer 14°C. October still gives sea around 22°C.

Barcelona is at its strongest in June and July, 26-28°C with 27mm of rain in each. Its autumn is the weak spot, with 82-83mm falling in September and October; Alicante's September is its own wettest month at 52mm, but well below that.
