The verdict

Choose Annecy if you want the warmer summer of the two, with July highs of 27°C and less rain in those weeks, and if park space near the centre matters more to you than a dense run of indoor sights.

Choose Innsbruck if you want more museums, more to see on foot near the centre and more protected land around the city, plus a livelier evening scene.

Where they differ

Annecy runs slightly warmer through the year and keeps somewhat more park space near the centre, plus 3 theme parks within reach against Innsbruck's 2, and 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1.

Innsbruck has about three times as many museums and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre. 31% of the land around it is protected against 20% around Annecy, and there are about twice as many places to drink.

Where they are alike

The weather year works out much the same in both. Highs run 5-27°C in Annecy and 4-26°C in Innsbruck, with the same warmest month, July, and January the coldest, and similar annual sunshine.

Eating out lands in a similar place: Annecy has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, Innsbruck a somewhat wider range of kitchens. Neither is a swimming destination, with no month of sea warm enough for it, and the two national price levels sit close together.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling for museums and evenings out should take Innsbruck: about three times as many museums, sights packed more tightly around the centre, and more places to drink, most of them central.

Walkers planning days out of town also lean to Innsbruck, where 31% of the surrounding land is protected against 20% around Annecy, though Annecy has more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Families after open space and warm summer days may prefer Annecy: more park space near the centre, 3 theme parks within reach, and July highs of 27°C, though Innsbruck has far more attractions near the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

Both have beaches counted nearby, 10 around Innsbruck and 9 around Annecy, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more. Treat that as water within reach rather than a swimming season. The same mismatch shows in Innsbruck's calendar: its warmest weeks are also its wettest, so a warm month and a dry month are not the same month.

The daily budget is a national price level for restaurants and hotels, one per country, not a measurement of either city. France and Austria land at the same €160 a day, which says nothing about how either city sits against its own national average.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

June to August is Annecy's window, with highs of 24-27°C and rain of 77-81mm, drier than Innsbruck through the same weeks. Autumn turns wet: October is the year's heaviest at 94mm.

Innsbruck is the better bet in winter and the shoulder months: January and February are its driest at 40-50mm, and October is drier there too. Its summer is warm at 24-26°C but the wettest part of its year, up to 144mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
