The verdict

Choose Annecy if you want somewhere small, a town of 132,000, where the restaurants and bars you will use sit near the centre and the water is close.

Choose Milan if you want museums, eating out, nightlife and things to do with children in quantity, packed within walking distance of the centre, plus slightly warmer weather through the year, up to 29°C in July.

Where they differ

Annecy is the smaller proposition, and what nightlife it has sits almost entirely near the centre, so an evening out needs no planning. It has 9 places to swim close by against Milan's 4.

Milan has many times as many museums, restaurants, bars and clubs, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre. For families it offers about twice as much central park space, 5 theme parks within reach against 3, and many more attractions near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination: neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, and what swimming there is only makes sense in high summer.

Their weather runs on the same calendar, warmest in July and coolest in January, with a similar amount of sunshine over the year and no month either can call dry. The national price levels behind them are close too, €160 for France and €155 for Italy.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling for museums and old buildings should go to Milan: many times as many museums as Annecy, grouped tightly around the centre, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2.

Families are better served in Milan as well, with far more attractions near the centre, about twice as much park space there, and 5 theme parks within reach against Annecy's 3.

If you are travelling to walk, swim and eat without a plan, Annecy suits better: 9 places to swim nearby, a compact centre, and a quiet evening scene rather than a large one.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate, the price level for restaurants and hotels in France and Italy rather than a measurement of either city. The two national figures sit close together, and a heavily visited city can sit further from its own country average than that gap, so neither tells you what a day will actually cost.

Counts can flatter, too. Annecy has 9 places to swim nearby, but neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming depends on a warm spell. And only about half of Milan's drinking places sit near the centre, so its nightlife means moving around.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Annecy: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (39 km from centre). Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Annecy is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 26-27°C, and it holds warmth into September at 21°C. Through late spring and early autumn it is also the drier of the two, at 77-87mm a month.

Milan is the stronger choice either side of summer, warmer by March at 15°C, and its winter months are the driest either city offers, though still not dry. The trade is autumn: October and November bring 113-127mm, well above what falls in Annecy at the same time.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
