The verdict

Choose Annecy if you want a lake summer, a wider range of kitchens near the centre and more protected land to walk into, and you can live with cold winters and rain spread through the year.

Choose Pisa if museums and a tightly walkable centre matter more, or if you want sea warm enough to swim in, drier summers and a season that runs from May into September.

Where they differ

Annecy has the wider range of kitchens, with about as many restaurants near the centre as Pisa. It also has more to walk into: 20% of the surrounding land is protected, park space near the centre is greater, and there are 9 lake beaches against Pisa's 1.

Pisa is the heritage trip, with roughly three times as many museums and notable places standing about three times as thick within walking distance of the centre. Its sea passes 21°C for four months, which Annecy never manages.

Where they are alike

Both keep open country close to a compact centre. Each has protected land around it and parks near the middle of town, and each offers day trips that do not require a long journey.

Evenings are modest in both. Drinking places and clubs sit close to the centre in each, Pisa with more bars, Annecy with more clubs, and neither runs on late nights. The national daily budgets behind them, €160 and €155, sit close together too.

Which traveller are you?

For a traveller who goes for museums and old streets, Pisa: it holds roughly three times as many museums, and its notable places are packed far more tightly into the walkable centre.

For a family, it depends on the week. Pisa has many more attractions near the centre and sea warm enough to swim in for four months. Annecy answers with more park space near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach against 2.

For someone travelling to eat and walk, Annecy: the wider range of kitchens near the centre, 20% of the surrounding land protected, and 9 beaches on the lake for a swim between walks.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 and €155, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels in each country, not measurements of Annecy or Pisa. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so neither says which trip will cost you more.

Beach counts and warm water are different things. Annecy's 9 beaches are on a lake, with no sea temperature at all, while Pisa's swimming case rests on warm sea rather than shoreline. And Pisa's autumn still reads warm while carrying its heaviest rain of the year.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Annecy: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (39 km from centre). Pisa: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (3.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Annecy is at its best from June to August, when highs sit at 24-27°C. Rain is steady rather than seasonal, 77-81mm in each of those months, so showers are part of the summer; September still reaches 21°C, and January stays near 5°C.

Pisa has the longer window, from May at 23°C through to September. July and August reach 30°C on 32-35mm of rain, with the sea at 22-25°C from June. October and November are wet, 125-132mm, and winter holds at 11-13°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
