The verdict

Choose Annecy if the outdoors decides it: 9 beaches within reach, a fifth of the surrounding land protected, and a wider range of kitchens than its size suggests. It suits walking and swimming days more than sightseeing ones.

Choose Verona if you want museums and heritage, attractions for children and evening options all packed close to the centre, and warmer, drier winters if you are travelling outside summer.

Where they differ

Annecy has the stronger claim on the outdoors: 9 beaches nearby against Verona's 2, and 20% of the land around it protected against 9% around Verona, so walking and swimming days come easily. Its restaurants cover a much wider range of kitchens.

Verona concentrates almost everything else near the centre: many times as many notable places within walking distance, about twice as many museums, 5 UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach against Annecy's 2, many more attractions aimed at children, and about three times as many places to drink.

Where they are alike

On days out and green space the two land in the same place by different routes: more protected countryside around Annecy, more park space near Verona's centre, and in both cases enough to fill a day away from the streets.

Neither offers warm water, with no month reaching 21°C. Both have a comparable spread of restaurants near the centre, and the two countries' price levels sit close together, at €160 and €155 a day.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Verona. Attractions near the centre outnumber Annecy's many times over, there are 4 theme parks within reach against 3, and more park space close in, so days need less planning.

Walkers and swimmers: Annecy. 9 beaches nearby against Verona's 2, and a fifth of the surrounding land protected, which makes water days and country walks the default rather than an excursion.

A short culture break: Verona, with about twice as many museums, sights packed within walking distance and about three times as many places to drink. Annecy answers with a wider range of kitchens at dinner.

What the numbers don't tell you

The €160 and €155 daily figures are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A gap that small says nothing about which trip costs more, and a heavily visited city can sit well above its own country's average.

The 9 beaches near Annecy come with no month of water at 21°C or more, so the swimming season is short. Verona's concentration near the centre cuts both ways: the same density that makes it walkable also means its museums and attractions are busiest in the months when the weather is best.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Annecy: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (39 km from centre). Verona: 1991-2020 normals, Verona / Villafranca (11.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Annecy peaks from June to August, with highs of 24-27°C and rain around 77-81mm a month. September to December are wetter still, at 87-94mm, and January is cold at 5°C.

Verona is at its best in May and June, 24-28°C and slightly drier, and again in September at 25°C, though that month brings 85mm. July and August reach 30°C, which is a lot for walking a dense centre. February and March are its driest, at 38-44mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
