The verdict

Choose Avignon if you want the warmer, drier year and the fuller day: daytime highs reach 31°C in July, there are theme parks within reach, more attractions near the centre and a wider range of kitchens.

Choose Como if your trip is built on walking and unhurried evenings in bars rather than on sights, and you can accept a cooler year, highs of 27°C at best, and rain in most months.

Where they differ

Avignon suits families better: about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, twice as much park space, and 4 theme parks within reach where Como has none. It also has more restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and a warmer year, 11-31°C against 7-27°C, with 2 months at 40mm of rain or less where Como has none.

Como's edge is the evening: about twice as many places to drink, mostly near the centre, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Avignon's 6.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Como has 8 beaches nearby and Avignon 1, but in neither does the water reach 21°C in any month, so swimming is incidental to either trip rather than a reason to go.

Both sit close to protected countryside that carries the day trips, and both keep their drinking places near the centre, so evenings stay walkable. The national daily budget estimates behind the two are close, at €160 and €155.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Avignon, clearly. It has around three times as many attractions near the centre, twice as much park space, and 4 theme parks within reach, where Como offers none of that.

Museums and old streets: Avignon again, with roughly twice as many museums and twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre. Como counters only on day trips, with 8 UNESCO-listed places in range against 6.

Late evenings: Como has about twice as many places to drink, all close to the centre, so nights are bar-led. Avignon has far more nightclubs if you want dancing rather than drinking.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 and €155, are national estimates for the two countries, covering restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either town. A heavily visited lakeside destination can sit well above its national average, so a gap this small tells you nothing about which trip will actually cost more.

Warm does not mean dry. Avignon's September keeps summer warmth but is its wettest month at 111mm, and Como's warmest months are also among its wettest, so picking on temperature alone can land you indoors. Como's lakeside beaches sit on water that never reaches 21°C.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Avignon: 1991-2020 normals, Nimes / Courbessac (34 km from centre). Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Avignon's window runs May to September, warm and mostly dry, with July the driest month at 34mm and highs of 31°C. September is still warm but the wettest month at 111mm, and the rest of autumn stays wet.

Como is at its best in July and August, at 27°C, but rain runs above 150mm through most of the warm half of the year. Late winter is the driest stretch, though highs of 9-14°C make it walking weather rather than sitting-out weather.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
