Where they differ

Barcelona puts the sea 2km from its centre, with 20 beaches nearby and three months when the water reaches 21°C or more; Santiago's nearest coast is 26km off. It also has many times more places to eat, across a much wider range of kitchens, and many times more bars and clubs.

Santiago has about twice as much park space near its centre, and 11% of the surrounding land protected against 10% around Barcelona. Its museums are far fewer but sit tightly together, walkable in one go.

Where they are alike

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €122 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here tells you which is the cheaper trip.

A warm month is not a dry one. Barcelona's warmest sea and best beach weather land in the same weeks as its peak heat at 29°C, and its warm early autumn carries the heaviest rain of its year, above 80mm a month. Santiago's only dry window is its short high summer; outside it, rain is the default.
