It also has more attractions near the centre for families, and 3 theme parks within reach where Valencia has none.

Valencia answers with the weather: highs of 17-31°C against Barcelona's 14-29°C, more dry months, and sea at 21°C or more for 5 months of the year against 3. Park space near the centre is roughly double.

Where they are alike

Both keep the sea close to the centre, 2km in Barcelona and 3km in Valencia, with city beaches either side and the water at its warmest in August. Barcelona has more beaches to choose from, Valencia a longer warm-sea season.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. That figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €122 a day beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here tells you which of the two is dearer on the ground.

Warm sea and dry skies do not arrive in the same month. In both cities the water is still near its warmest in September and October, and those are the wettest months, 66-83mm. Barcelona's family advantage rests largely on ticketed attractions and theme parks, busiest exactly when the weather is best.

Valencia holds up over a longer season: May to October stays warm, and July and August are nearly dry at 7-15mm. Winter is milder too, with highs of 17°C against Barcelona's 14°C, which makes it the better off-season choice.
