The verdict

Choose Biarritz if the trip is built around the water: 43 beaches within reach and a sea warm enough to swim in through August.

Choose Bordeaux if you want a city to walk. It has far more places to eat and drink near the centre, more museums, and more protected countryside for day trips, and it runs warmer and drier in summer.

Where they differ

Biarritz has 43 beaches nearby against Bordeaux's four, and two months when the sea reaches 21°C or more, which Bordeaux never manages. The coast is what it is for.

Bordeaux has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, so a week there needn't repeat itself. The same gap shows after dark: many times as many bars and many times as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre, where an evening in Biarritz means a much shorter list.

Where they are alike

Neither is a year-round warm destination, but both stay mild rather than extreme: highs of 13-26°C in Biarritz and 11-28°C in Bordeaux, and rain in every month, with neither dropping to 40mm or less.

For families and for getting out of town they overlap more than the headline suggests: each has one theme park within reach and park space near the centre, and both sit within day-trip distance of UNESCO-listed places.

Which traveller are you?

A surfer or beach-first traveller should take Biarritz. With 43 beaches nearby and the sea at 21-22°C in late summer, it is the only one of the two where swimming shapes the day.

Anyone travelling to eat and drink should take Bordeaux: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them walkable.

Families and walkers are better served in Bordeaux too, with about three times as many notable places within walking distance, far more attractions near the centre, and 35% of the surrounding land protected for day trips.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it carries no information about which of these two costs less. The €160 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city.

Biarritz's beach advantage is concentrated: the sea reaches 21°C or more in only two months, and every month there carries substantial rain, so the beach count is worth less outside high summer, which is also when a town that small absorbs the whole region's visitors. And Bordeaux's weak beach showing simply means swimming is not what the city is for.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Biarritz: 1991-2020 normals, San Sebastian / Fuenterrabia (24.4 km from centre). Bordeaux: 1991-2020 normals, Bordeaux / Merignac (9.5 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Biarritz is at its best in July and August: highs of 25-26°C, the sea at 21-22°C, and the year's least rain. Rain is what limits the rest of the calendar, with 224mm in November, and the sea is cold by then.

Bordeaux holds a longer season, June to September, warmer at 25-28°C and drier throughout, with 47mm in July against Biarritz's 97mm. If you are not swimming, its spring and autumn are the more comfortable choice.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
