Bled or Hallstatt?

Our verdict in twelve categories, each scored against the same fixed benchmark cities, and the climate month by month, so you can choose for your trip.

Choose Bled for

  • beaches
  • prices
  • families

Bled is the better pick for an active, all-round week in the mountains. The lake is warm enough for real summer swimming, and the level shore path and Straža hill keep children busy. The bill is lighter, and on days off the trails Ljubljana, Radovljica and even the Adriatic at Piran are within reach. It is also the calmer place to slow down, with hotel pools fed by warm springs and quiet mornings on the water.

Choose Hallstatt for

  • culture and sights
  • shopping
  • nature and the outdoors

Hallstatt suits the traveller who wants the more remarkable place rather than the easier one. Seven thousand years of salt mining, the painted skulls of the Beinhaus and a village stacked between cliff and lake give it more to see. Above it, the Dachstein offers ice caves, glacier valleys and a high karst plateau. Expect to pay more, swim in colder water and plan around the midday crowds.

Beaches & swimming

Bled 50Hallstatt 28

Neither has a sea, but Bled is the better place to swim. Its lake warms to around 24°C in high summer, and the lidos below the castle and at the shallow western end near Velika Zaka make it easy to spend whole afternoons in the water. Strong swimmers can head out to the island.

Hallstätter See is deeper, darker and fed by mountain water, and it peaks near 20°C. A dip from the village jetty or the lido at Obertraun is a bracing break after a hike rather than a plan for the day, and the steep shores leave little lawn to lie on.

Food & drink

Bled 20Hallstatt 20

Neither village is a reason to travel for food, and both serve day visitors traditional dishes. The difference is the signature. Bled has the tall custard kremšnita on a lakeside terrace, plus trout and žlikrofi in the inns, while Hallstatt's one local speciality is char and whitefish from its own lake, smoked or pan-fried.

For a better meal, Bled sends you to the farm inns in the valleys or to Ljubljana. From Hallstatt you go to the patisseries of Bad Ischl.

Culture & sights

Hallstatt 35Bled 22

Hallstatt has more depth. The village is the heart of a UNESCO landscape, with a salt mine above it that has been worked for some seven thousand years. The Museum Hallstatt and the painted skulls in the Beinhaus turn that history into a full day.

Bled's sights are fewer and more scenic: the cliff-top castle with its small museum and printing workshop, the pletna boat to the baroque island church and its wishing bell, and the old spa villas along the shore. They make a memorable half day, but serious sightseers staying in Bled head to Ljubljana.

Nightlife

Bled 5Hallstatt 3

Both villages go quiet early, so neither suits a night out. Bled has a little more to work with, with a pub or two and hotel bars along the lit shore, and Ljubljana is under an hour away for a proper evening. In Hallstatt, once the day visitors have gone, an evening means a long dinner and a glass of wine by the water, with nothing open late.

Nature & outdoors

Hallstatt 90Bled 86

Both are first-rate mountain bases, and the difference lies in character. Bled is the gentler way into the Julian Alps. It has a level lake circuit, short climbs to Ojstrica and Osojnica, the walkways of Vintgar Gorge and rafting on the Sava, and Triglav National Park, with Bohinj and Pokljuka, is within half an hour.

Hallstatt feels wilder and steeper, with the Dachstein rising straight from the village. The Krippenstein cable car leads to the Five Fingers platform and the ice and mammoth caves, the Echerntal climbs towards the glacier, and the Gosausee mirrors the mountain in one of the classic views of the Alps. The catch is that mist and rain can hide the views for days.

Day trips

Bled 70Hallstatt 63

Bled has the wider spread of outings, because a whole small country and two neighbours are close by. Ljubljana is under an hour away and Radovljica just down the road. Postojna cave and Predjama Castle make a full day, the Adriatic at Piran is about two hours off, and Austria's Wörthersee lies through the Karawanks tunnel.

Hallstatt's trips stay mostly within the Salzkammergut lakes: imperial Bad Ischl, the altarpiece at St Wolfgang and Gmunden's lake castle. Salzburg is the big prize but makes a long day, and without a car every outing takes planning.

Good for families

Bled 60Hallstatt 45

Bled is the more relaxed choice with children. The village is calm, the shore path suits pushchairs and small cyclists, and the shallow lidos are good for paddling. Straža hill adds a toboggan run and a rope park, though a wet day is hard to fill.

Hallstatt has a few standout moments, above all the salt mine with its miners' slides and underground lake, plus the ice caves for older children. The village itself is a narrow, steep lane crowded at midday, which is tiring with small children, so families often stay in Obertraun and come in for a few hours.

Getting around

Bled 58Hallstatt 58

Both villages can be crossed on foot in minutes, and both push visitors towards a car for the wider mountains. Bled is flat around the lake, with buses to Ljubljana and Bohinj and two train stations nearby, but the passes and trailheads are poorly served.

Hallstatt is steep and largely car-free, with steps between its lanes. Arriving by train means a short boat crossing from the station on the far shore, and the buses to Obertraun, Gosau and Bad Ischl thin out outside summer.

Shopping & style

Hallstatt 15Bled 5

Hallstatt is the better place for souvenirs, thanks to salt from its own mine, sold in grinders and bath mixes, alongside carved wood, dirndl accessories and schnapps on the main lane. Bled has little beyond a few lakeside stalls selling honey, lace and painted beehive panels, and anything more means a trip to Ljubljana. Neither is a place to plan a trip around shopping.

Affordability

Bled 45Hallstatt 25

Bled is the easier place to keep costs down. It is pricier than the rest of Slovenia, but village guesthouses, the campsite at the western end of the lake and bases in Radovljica or Bohinj bring the bill down. Buses are cheap, and the lake path and viewpoints cost nothing.

Hallstatt's few rooms and worldwide fame push prices well above the Austrian norm, and the salt mine, the funicular and the Dachstein cable car add up quickly. Budget travellers usually sleep in Obertraun, Bad Goisern or Bad Ischl and visit for the day.

Live music & performing arts

Hallstatt 8Bled 5

Neither village has a theatre or a regular programme, so live music is a matter of luck. In Bled that means summer concerts in the castle and churches and folk evenings for visitors, and in Hallstatt the brass band on feast days. The difference is what lies nearby: from Bled, opera and concerts mean Ljubljana, while Hallstatt has Bad Ischl's summer operetta and the Salzburg season within reach.

Wellness & relaxation

Bled 55Hallstatt 45

Bled is the better place to unwind without leaving the village. Its past as Arnold Rikli's nineteenth-century health resort lives on in the lakeside hotel spas and pools fed by mild springs, some of them open to day guests. Outside high summer the shore is very calm.

Hallstatt itself has only a few hotel saunas, and the brine baths and thermal complex are half an hour away in Bad Ischl. Its stillness comes at dawn and dusk. The crowded lane at midday means a slow day has to be spent on the water or in the hills.

Where the figures come from

Bled's temperatures are measured 36 km from the centre, at Klagenfurt.

Bled has no rain gauge within 25 km of the centre, so its rainfall comes from a gridded climate dataset read at the city rather than from a gauge further away.

Hallstatt's temperatures are measured 56 km from the centre, at Salzburg.

Hallstatt has no rain gauge within 25 km of the centre, so its rainfall comes from a gridded climate dataset read at the city rather than from a gauge further away.

Temperature and rainfall are climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bled: 1991-2020 normals, Klagenfurt (35.5 km from centre). Hallstatt: 1991-2020 normals, Salzburg (55.5 km from centre).

Both are summer places, with late June to early September the window for swimming and the high trails. Bled runs a little warmer, with July highs around 27°C against Hallstatt's 25°C, and it gets noticeably more sunshine through the summer. Hallstatt has its wettest weather in the middle of summer, so a July stay there should allow for days of rain and mist on the lake.

Autumn reverses the picture. September and October are pleasant walking months in both, but Bled grows steadily wetter into November, its rainiest month at about 211mm. Hallstatt dries out over the same months, which makes it the better choice for an October visit. Winter days in both hover near freezing, too cold for lingering in the streets but right for snow on Pokljuka or the Krippenstein.

Which traveller are you?

On a family trip with young children, Bled is the easier base. The flat lake path takes pushchairs, the lidos are shallow, and the toboggan run and rope park on Straža fill an afternoon. Hallstatt's single steep lane and midday crowds make hard work of a buggy.

For a culture and arts trip, Hallstatt gives more to see. The salt mine, the prehistoric finds in the Museum Hallstatt and the painted skulls of the Beinhaus tell a story thousands of years deep. Bled's castle and island church fit easily into a day.

On a trip on a tight budget, Bled makes the money go further. Guesthouses in nearby villages, the lakeside campsite and cheap buses all help, and the lake path and viewpoints are free. Hallstatt's few rooms charge well above the Austrian average.
