Where they differ
Bled's advantages are outside the town. 20% of the land around it is protected, against 12% around Prague, and three UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against one from Prague. Summers are warmer too, with highs reaching 27°C.
Prague has many times as many restaurants, bars and clubs near the centre, and a much wider range of kitchens. Notable places cluster tightly around the middle, so more is walkable, and the attractions, park space and three theme parks within reach make it the easier trip with children.
Where they are alike
Neither is a swimming destination. Prague has 7 beaches within reach and Bled 3, but neither sees a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water stays incidental to a trip in either.
The climates share a shape: both are inland, both peak in high summer and both fall to 1-2°C at the coldest, so the season matters more here than the choice between them. The national price estimates behind the two countries are not far apart either.
Which traveller are you?
If you want museums, a choice of dinner and somewhere to go afterwards, take Prague. It has many times the restaurants, bars and clubs of Bled, and enough notable places packed around the centre to fill several days on foot.
Families are better served in Prague too: more attractions and park space near the centre, and three theme parks within reach against one from Bled. Bled's offer for children is the outdoors rather than organised entertainment.
Walkers and anyone after quiet should take Bled. 20% of the surrounding land is protected, three UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach, and summer afternoons reach 27°C with more annual sunshine than Prague.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €131 and €107, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either place. A capital and a small lake town can each sit a long way from their own country's average, further than the gap between the two figures, so treat neither as the cheaper trip.
The other trap is reading a warm month as a good one. Bled's warmest months are also its wettest, at 127-139mm against Prague's under 80mm, and the beaches counted near either city come with no month of sea warm enough for comfortable swimming.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bled: 1991-2020 normals, Klagenfurt (35.5 km from centre). Prague: 1991-2020 normals, Praha-Libus (8.1 km from centre).
Bled peaks in July and August, with highs of 26-27°C and the year's best sun. Those are also its wettest months, 127-139mm each, so count on losing parts of days to rain.
Prague's window is longer and drier. April to June runs 16-23°C on 27-80mm, and September still holds 20°C with 44mm against Bled's 114mm in the same month, so Prague is the safer choice either side of high summer. Midwinter is poor in both.
