The verdict
Choose Bodrum if the sea is the point: 30 beaches within reach, water warm enough to swim from late spring into autumn, and the wider choice of bars, clubs and restaurants, most of them close to the centre.
Choose Goreme if you want a small inland base, with more attractions near the centre for children, more protected land around it, and no interest in swimming.

Where they differ
Bodrum sits on the coast, with 30 beaches nearby and five months when the sea reaches 21°C or more; Goreme has neither. Its evenings are far broader, with many times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre, where Goreme's few sit only half centrally.
Goreme has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, which counts for most with children in tow, though Bodrum holds the single theme park within reach.
Where they are alike
Neither city is built around excursions into open country. Protected land covers 11% of the area around Goreme and 5% around Bodrum, so in both cases the outdoors is a limited part of the trip rather than its shape.
Heritage is thin on both sides: a small number of museums each, slightly more in Goreme, more tightly grouped around the centre in Bodrum. The rain pattern is closer than the temperatures suggest, with five months at 40mm or less in each.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming is the reason you are travelling, Bodrum is the only option of the two: 30 beaches nearby and water above 21°C for five months of the year. Goreme has no coast at all.
Anyone who wants late evenings and a wide choice of tables should also take Bodrum, with many times as many bars and clubs than Goreme, most within walking distance of the centre, and many more restaurants.
Families, and anyone wanting quiet days close to base, are better served by Goreme, with about three times as many attractions near the centre and more protected land around it, though Bodrum holds the one theme park.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figure here is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which of these two costs less; the €100 daily budget beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of Bodrum or Goreme. Treat prices as an open question and check costs locally.
No weather station near Bodrum records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly ratings rest on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. That side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. Its strongest months are also when 30 beaches draw the most people.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bodrum: 1993-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Kos Airport (42.7 km from centre). Goreme: 1991-2020 normals, Nevsehir (10.2 km from centre).
Bodrum has the longer usable window, May to October, and the water stays swimmable into autumn. September is the pick, at 28°C with the sea at 24°C and very little rain; midwinter is the reverse, near 140mm a month.
Goreme peaks later and more briefly. From July to September rain nearly stops, under 15mm a month, with daytime highs around 30°C. May and June are warm enough but noticeably wetter, above 50mm, and January is cold.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
