The verdict

Choose Bologna if you want museums, restaurants and a real night out, all within a compact centre, and if you can take July and August at 32°C.

Choose Monaco if the sea decides it: 50 beaches within reach and water warm enough to swim in through late summer, with milder winters and more protected land nearby, in exchange for quiet evenings.

Where they differ

Bologna is the stronger city for an evening out, with many times as many bars and clubs as Monaco. It also has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, across a wider range of kitchens, and about three times as many museums.

Monaco is the one with the sea: 50 beaches nearby against Bologna's 2, and 4 months of water at 21°C or above. Protected land covers 24% of its surroundings against 7% around Bologna, and theme parks are within reach.

Where they are alike

Both are walkable at the core: the notable places sit within a short walk of the centre in each, Monaco with somewhat more of them packed into its small area.

Neither has a short season: both run warm from May to September, with highs of 24-32°C in Bologna and 21-28°C in Monaco, and both have protected countryside and day-trip reach beyond the centre, though of different kinds.

Which traveller are you?

If you travel for museums and long evenings, Bologna: about three times the museums of Monaco, a far wider choice of restaurants near the centre, and bars and clubs in numbers Monaco does not approach.

If the point is swimming, Monaco: 50 beaches nearby where Bologna has 2, sea at 24-25°C in July and August, and protected land within reach for walking days.

Families with young children find more attractions and park space near the centre in Bologna, about twice as many attractions as Monaco, though Monaco has theme parks within reach and milder winter days at 13-14°C.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries a daily budget for Bologna, about €155, and none at all for Monaco, so nothing in these figures tells you what a day there costs, and the value ranking cannot place the two side by side.

Monaco's beaches are counted as nearby rather than underfoot, and the months when the sea is warmest are also the driest and busiest on the coast. Bologna cuts the other way: 32°C in July and August is the heat you sit in, and the relief of autumn comes with 75mm in September and October.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bologna: 1991-2020 normals, Bologna / Borgo Panigale (5.5 km from centre). Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bologna is at its best in May and June, with highs of 24-29°C and rain under 40mm in June. July and August push to 32°C, and September stays warm but rain climbs to 75mm.

Monaco is at its strongest in July and August: highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C and only 13-18mm of rain. October and November are its wettest, at 124-138mm. Through winter it holds 13-14°C against Bologna's 7-8°C, so off-season days are easier there.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
