Where they differ
Brussels has about twice as many museums as Stuttgart, clustered tightly around the centre, and 10 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Stuttgart's 3. Far more notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and there are about three times as many restaurants and places to drink nearby.
Stuttgart's strength lies beyond the streets: 51% of the surrounding land is protected against 6% around Brussels, there is somewhat more park space near the centre, and 3 beaches within reach where Brussels has none.
Where they are alike
On price the two sit at much the same level. The national estimates behind them, €180 for Belgium and €163 for Germany, are close together, so neither country's price level sets the trips apart.
Neither is a swimming destination: Brussels has no beaches, and Stuttgart's 3 come without sea warm enough to swim in. Their winters match as well, both at 6°C at their coldest, so the cold months feel much the same in either.
Which traveller are you?
Museum-and-restaurant weekenders should take Brussels: about twice as many museums as Stuttgart, set close together, a much wider range of kitchens, and 10 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach for a second or third day.
Anyone planning to spend whole days outdoors should take Stuttgart, where 51% of the surrounding land is protected, park space near the centre is greater, and summer highs reach 26°C.
Families are more evenly matched. Both have 2 theme parks within reach; Brussels has roughly three times as many attractions near the centre, while Stuttgart offers more green space and drier spring days.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €180 and €163, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels for Belgium and Germany, not measurements of Brussels or Stuttgart. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than the two countries sit from each other, so neither figure tells you which trip will cost more.
Stuttgart's outdoor advantage is measured around the city rather than in it: 51% protected land and 3 nearby beaches need transport, and neither city offers sea swimming. Its warmest months are also among its wettest, so high summer temperatures promise no dry days.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Brussels: 1991-2020 normals, Uccle (5.2 km from centre). Stuttgart: 1991-2020 normals, Stuttgart / Neckartal (2.8 km from centre).
Brussels peaks from June to August, with highs of 21-23°C, though that is also its wettest stretch, at 72-90mm a month. May and September, at 18-20°C, are quieter and a little drier.
Stuttgart gives the warmer summer, reaching 24-26°C, and it is drier in August. Its clearer edge is the cold half of the year: January to April stay at 33-43mm against Brussels's 47-77mm, so a city break out of season is less likely to be rained through.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
