The verdict

Choose Cannes if the trip is built around swimming and sun: dozens of beaches, sea at 21°C or more for four months, and the drier summer of the two.

Choose Milan if you want museums, restaurants, late evenings and days out with children, with much more of the city within walking distance of the centre and more to reach on a day trip.

Where they differ

Cannes is the one with a coast: 68 beaches nearby against Milan's 4, and four months of sea at 21°C or more, which Milan has none of. Its summer is drier too, with months at 40mm of rain or less that Milan never gets.

Milan has many times as many attractions and as much park space near the centre, plus 5 theme parks within reach against Cannes's 3. It also has far more museums, more UNESCO-listed places on day trips, and many times as many bars and clubs.

Where they are alike

Value is where the two sit closest. Both countries carry a similar national price level for restaurants and hotels, around €155-160 a day, so cost is unlikely to be what decides between them.

They are also close on weather and on how much sits near the centre. Both reach 28-29°C at the height of summer, and in both a walk from the middle takes in notable places and a comparable range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

If the point of the trip is swimming, Cannes is the only real option here: 68 beaches nearby and four months when the sea is at 21°C or more. Milan cannot match that on any measure.

Museum-goers and people who want long evenings out should take Milan: far more museums, tightly grouped around the centre, more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and many times as many bars and clubs.

Families lean to Milan too, with many times as many attractions and as much park space near the centre, and 5 theme parks within reach against Cannes's 3.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figure, €155-160, is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices in each country, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited coastal town or a large business city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so it settles nothing.

Cannes's beach strength is concentrated: the sea passes 21°C for only four months, and those are the months everyone else comes. Milan's warmer summer highs come with rain in every month and 7°C in January, so the year-round picture is less even than a summer visit suggests.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cannes: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (18 km from centre). Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Cannes is at its best from June to September: highs of 25-28°C, sea at 24-25°C at the peak, and the two driest months of the year, both under 20mm. Autumn is the trade-off, with over 120mm in October and again in November.

Milan's window runs May to September, warmest at 29°C in midsummer. Rain is spread through it, close to 100mm in the wettest of those months, so July and August are the steadier bet, while January highs of 7°C rule out a winter visit.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
