The verdict

Choose Cannes if the sea is the point: dozens of beaches within reach, four months warm enough to swim, and a midsummer that is also the driest part of the year.

Choose Verona if you are travelling with children or want heritage on foot: attractions and parks near the centre, more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and warm summer days reaching 30°C.

Where they differ

Cannes is the beach city: 68 beaches nearby against Verona's 2, and four months when the sea sits at 21°C or above, which Verona has none of. It also holds about twice as many museums and slightly more notable places within walking distance.

Verona suits families better: many times as many attractions and park space close to the centre, and more theme parks within reach. Its heritage carries further too, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Cannes's 2, clustered tightly around the middle of town.

Where they are alike

Both have compact centres, with the notable places close together and Cannes holding slightly more of them within walking distance.

Day trips work from either: 17% of the land around Cannes is protected against 9% around Verona, while Verona has far more park space near the centre. Eating out is a near match, similar numbers of restaurants centrally, with Cannes spanning a wider range of kitchens. The national daily budgets are close, €160 and €155.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming is the reason for the trip, Cannes, and only Cannes: dozens of beaches nearby, sea above 21°C for four months of the year, and the driest part of its calendar falling exactly in that window.

Travelling with children points to Verona: attractions and park space close to the centre in quantity, more theme parks within reach, and a compact core that keeps walking distances short.

For museums and old stone, Verona again, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2 and its collections clustered around the centre, though Cannes holds the larger number of museums.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, one per country, not measurements of Cannes or Verona. A small, heavily visited coastal town and a city of 256,000 can each sit well away from their own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat them as background rather than a comparison of costs.

Cannes's beach strength and its best months land in the same stretch of high summer, which is when everyone else arrives. A strong weather year also hides the autumn: October and November bring 124-138mm, with the sea still warm.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

WorseBetter

Cannes peaks in July and August: highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C, and very little rain, 13mm and 18mm. June is close behind. Avoid October and November, when 124-138mm falls.

Verona is at its best in May and June, with highs of 24-28°C and no beach to miss. July and August reach 30°C, hot for walking a city. Rain is spread fairly evenly, September the wettest at 85mm, and January and February sit at 7-8°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
