The verdict
Choose Catania if the sea matters: 5 beaches within reach and water at 21°C or more for five months, plus hotter and drier summers.
Choose Florence if you would rather walk between museums and monuments than swim: far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, several times the museum choice, and more parks and attractions if you have children in tow.

Where they differ
Catania is the one with a coast: 5 beaches nearby and sea at 21°C or more for five months, where Florence offers no swimming at all. It also runs warmer through the year, with highs of 16-35°C against 11-33°C, and more genuinely dry months in summer.
Florence packs its interest into the centre: many times as many notable places within walking distance, about three times as many museums, and roughly twice as many restaurants and places to drink close by.
Where they are alike
Neither city is a base for wild country. Around 10% of the land near Catania is protected and 9% near Florence, and in both the day-trip range is a supporting argument rather than the reason to go.
Both keep eating and drinking close to the centre, and the range of kitchens is much the same in each, even if Florence has more of them. Summers are hot in both, with August highs of 35°C and 33°C.
Which traveller are you?
If you want swimming built into the trip, Catania: 5 beaches nearby and sea at 21°C or more through the second half of the year, which Florence cannot offer at any point.
For museums and heritage, Florence, comfortably: several times the museum choice, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Catania's 3, most of it walkable from the centre.
Families split. Florence has more park space near the centre and more attractions aimed at visitors; Catania has 1 theme park within reach and a coast, which may matter more with swimmers in the group.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it cannot tell you which city costs less. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of Catania or Florence.
Seasonal strengths also hide their conditions. Catania's swimming case rests on the hottest, busiest months, when highs reach 35°C, while its most comfortable weather comes earlier in the year. In Florence, the warm end of autumn arrives with monthly rain above 100mm, so a month that reads warm is not necessarily a month spent outdoors.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Catania: 1991-2020 normals, Catania / Sigonella (18.9 km from centre). Florence: 1995-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Firenze / Peretola (5.6 km from centre).
Catania peaks in May, with highs near 26°C and only 18mm of rain, and it stays workable into October, when the sea is still above 23°C. Midsummer is hot but almost rainless, at 34-35°C, so shade and the coast do the work.
Florence works best in May and June, at 24-29°C, and again in the first half of September. After that, autumn rain builds to 102-132mm a month, and winter days are cool and wet.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
