Where they differ

La Spezia turns outward. 13% of the land around it is protected against 10% around Catania, it has roughly twice as much park space near the centre, and the sea starts at the centre itself, with 32 beaches nearby.

Where they are alike

Both cities warm and cool on the same rhythm. August is the hottest month in each and also the month when the sea is warmest, at 26°C and 25°C, and January is the coolest in both. Sunshine over the year is close.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information: the figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Neither is the cheaper trip on this evidence.

La Spezia has far more beaches, but a count says nothing about crowding, and its warm-sea season runs a month shorter than Catania's, packed into the same weeks most people travel. Catania cuts the other way: midsummer highs reach 35°C, which is a real constraint on walking a dense centre, and its own best month falls in spring.

Catania's usable window is the wider of the two. May is the pick, with 26°C and 18mm of rain; July and August are hot but almost rainless; October still swims, with the sea at 23°C. Winter is the wet part of its year.

La Spezia peaks later and over a shorter run: June to August, with highs of 27-30°C and rainfall down to 32-41mm. Its autumn is the heavy one, over 100mm a month, so from September the drier choice is Catania.
