The verdict
Choose Catania if you want the sea: five months warm enough to swim, dry summers and mild winters, with the draw being the coast and the climate rather than the density of things to do.
Choose Milan if you are travelling with children, want museums, restaurants and nightlife within walking reach of where you sleep, and do not mind a cooler, wetter year.

Where they differ
Catania has five beaches nearby and, more to the point, a sea above 21°C from June to October, peaking at 26°C in August; Milan has no month of swimmable sea at all. Warm dry summers and mild winters come with it.
Milan has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, far more park space and five theme parks within reach against Catania's one, which matters with children. It also packs many more notable places into walking distance of the centre, so days need less transport.
Where they are alike
Both are warmest in high summer and coldest in January, and both offer a long run of walkable months: peak highs reach 35°C in Catania and 29°C in Milan, with spring and early autumn mild in both.
Both also support a museum and heritage trip, with UNESCO-listed places in day-trip range, four from Milan and three from Catania, and both have restaurant choice near the centre, though Milan's is the wider range.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone whose trip revolves around swimming should take Catania. It is the only one of the two with a usable sea, warm from June to October and peaking at 26°C, and its beaches sit close to the city.
Families with children are better served in Milan: more attractions near the centre, far more park space to break up a day, and five theme parks within reach against Catania's one.
A traveller after museums, eating out and late nights wants Milan: roughly three times as many museums as Catania, far more places to drink, and most of it inside a walkable centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison here carries no information. That figure is a national price level and is identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which city costs more day to day. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of Catania or Milan.
The beach picture needs care too. Milan is credited with beaches nearby, but no sea temperature sits behind them, so a count is not a swim. Catania's warmest water arrives with its hottest, driest weeks, 35°C days and 9mm in August, which is also the least comfortable time to be out walking.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Catania: 1991-2020 normals, Catania / Sigonella (18.9 km from centre). Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre).
Catania peaks in May, with highs near 26°C and just 18mm of rain. The sea is above 21°C from June to October and warmest at 26°C in August, when days hit 35°C and rain is 9mm. November and December are the wet end, at 71-83mm.
Milan is best from June to August, with highs of 26-29°C and July the driest of them at 57mm. September and October stay mild but are the wettest months of the year, at 113-116mm, and January days top out at 7°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
