The verdict

Choose Cologne if you want more to do beyond the centre: protected countryside within day-trip reach, theme parks for children, and a wider choice of bars, clubs and places to eat.

Choose Dresden if the trip is mainly museums and the walking between them, and you would rather have a drier spring, about 36mm in April against Cologne's 48mm, with quieter evenings.

Where they differ

Cologne is the better base for leaving the city: 53% of the land around it is protected against 14% around Dresden, and 6 theme parks are within reach against Dresden's 2. It also has about three times as many restaurants and places to drink near the centre, and twice as many nightclubs.

Dresden has somewhat more museums, and a wider range of kitchens. Its weather runs slightly warmer and drier: summer highs of 26°C, and four months at 40mm of rain or less, which Cologne has none of.

Where they are alike

Both centres hold about the same number of notable places within walking distance, so either can be seen on foot.

Neither is a swimming destination: there are beaches nearby, 40 near Cologne and 22 near Dresden, but no month with water at 21°C or more. The weather profiles are close too, with July highs of 25-26°C and January highs of 4-6°C, so the season shapes a trip the same way in both.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Cologne. It has 6 theme parks within reach against Dresden's 2, more attractions and more park space near the centre, and enough choice of places to eat to keep a week simple.

Out in the evening: Cologne again, with roughly three times as many places to drink and restaurants near the centre, and twice as many nightclubs. Dresden's nights are quieter, though its kitchens span a wider range.

Museums and quiet walking: Dresden. It holds somewhat more museums than Cologne in a centre of much the same walkable size, and its spring is drier, around 36mm in April.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €163 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. If cost decides your trip, this dataset cannot settle it.

Beach counts also mislead. Cologne has 40 nearby, nearly twice Dresden's, but neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so these are inland swims on warm days rather than a seaside holiday. And the warmest months in both are also the wettest, near 80mm, so heat and dry days do not arrive together.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cologne: 1991-2020 normals, Köln-Stammheim (5.4 km from centre). Dresden: 1991-2020 normals, Dresden-Strehlen (3.8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Cologne is at its best from June to August, with highs of 23-25°C, though that is also its wettest stretch at 76-81mm a month. May, at 60mm, is the drier alternative.

Dresden pulls ahead in late spring: April reaches 17°C on about 36mm, and June 24°C, both drier than Cologne at the same time. July and August are warmest at 26°C but wettest at 80-83mm. Winter is colder, 4-6°C in January and February.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
