The verdict

Choose Frankfurt if you want a full city: many kitchens to eat through, plenty of bars and clubs, museums, park space and 2 theme parks within reach, and enough walkable sights to fill several days with children in tow.

Choose Como if you want warmth and quiet water instead: 8 beaches nearby, more sunshine across the year, and UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach rather than a dense centre to work through.

Where they differ

Como is the warmer of the two, with daytime highs of 7-27°C across the year against Frankfurt's 5-26°C, and more sunshine hours. It has 8 beaches nearby against 4, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 4, with its museums packed tightly around the centre.

Frankfurt has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and far more for families: many more attractions and park space close in, plus 2 theme parks where Como has none.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Como has 8 beaches nearby and Frankfurt 4, but neither gets a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water is a detail of a trip to either rather than a reason for one.

They also run close on climate and cost. Both are warmest in high summer, at 27°C in Como and 26°C in Frankfurt, both cool sharply by winter, and the national budget estimates behind them sit close together.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Frankfurt. Attractions and park space cluster near the centre, and 2 theme parks sit within reach where Como has none, so a wet afternoon still has somewhere to go.

Eating and going out: Frankfurt again. Many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and far more bars and clubs, most of them close enough to walk between.

After warmth, water and days out of town: Como. 8 beaches nearby, twice as many UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, more sunshine over the year, and highs of 27°C in high summer, with a small centre you can cover quickly.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €163, are national price levels for Italy and Germany rather than measurements of either city. A small lakeside town that draws heavy visitor traffic and a large city can each sit well away from their country average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither reads as the cheaper trip.

Como's warmest months are also its wettest: rainfall runs 138-178mm from April through November, so a high summer temperature does not promise dry days. Its beaches are lake shore, with no month of sea at 21°C or more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 27°C, though both months bring around 158mm of rain; September still holds 22°C and works for a quieter trip.

Frankfurt's advantage is spring. April is dry at 38mm with highs of 17°C, while Como is far wetter through the same weeks. Frankfurt's midsummer reaches 26°C on 60-68mm, less rain than Como sees in any month of its warm season, which matters if you plan to be outdoors all day.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
