The verdict
Choose Frankfurt if you want a city that keeps going after dinner: far more places to drink and eat, more to see within walking distance of the centre, and more for children, including 2 theme parks within reach.
Choose Heidelberg if the point is what lies outside the city: much of the surrounding land is protected, and the town itself is small at 163,000 people.

Where they differ
Frankfurt is the larger city: many times as many bars and clubs as Heidelberg, most of them near the centre, and many times as many restaurants, across a wider range of kitchens. Its centre packs in far more notable places within walking distance, and for families it has about twice as many attractions near the centre, more park space, and 2 theme parks within reach against 1.
Heidelberg's advantage is the land around it: 52% protected against 28% around Frankfurt, so day trips start closer to open country.
Where they are alike
Neither is a place to swim in the sea. Heidelberg has 6 beaches within reach and Frankfurt 4, but both are inland cities and neither gets a month of sea water at 21°C or more.
The weather is effectively the same in both, with daytime highs running 5-26°C across the year and roughly equal sunshine. Their heritage offering is close too: both have 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, with Frankfurt holding somewhat more museums.
Which traveller are you?
A weekend that runs late: Frankfurt. It has many times more bars and clubs than Heidelberg, most of them close to the centre, and the wider choice of restaurants and kitchens to start the evening with.
Families with children: Frankfurt again. About twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space within reach, and 2 theme parks against Heidelberg's 1, with more to fall back on when it rains.
Walkers and day-trippers: Heidelberg. 52% of the surrounding land is protected against 28% around Frankfurt, so open country begins near the town; expect a quieter evening in return.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €163 a day beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here tells you which of the two costs more.
The best months are also among the wettest. July is the warmest month in both, at 26°C, and also the rainiest, 68mm in Frankfurt and 80mm in Heidelberg, so a high-summer trip carries rain in either place. Likewise, the beaches counted nearby are not sea: neither city has a month of water warm enough to swim in.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre). Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre).
Frankfurt's best run is June to September, with highs of 24-26°C in June to August and 21°C in September. Spring is the drier part of the year here: April sees 38mm against Heidelberg's 45mm, which makes Frankfurt the safer bet for an early-season trip.
Heidelberg peaks in the same months on the same temperatures, but summer rain is heavier: 80mm in July against Frankfurt's 68mm. August is the more even month, 26°C and 67mm. December and January, at 5-6°C, are weak in both.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
