The verdict

Choose Como if the trip is mostly about what lies around the city: 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, a large share of protected land, and a warmer year, with summer highs of 27°C.

Choose Munich if you want the city itself to carry the days, with far more places to eat and drink, denser walkable sights, and much stronger provision for families.

Where they differ

Como's advantages sit outside the centre: 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1, and 23% of the surrounding land protected against 17%. It also runs warmer through the year, 7-27°C against 4-25°C.

Munich has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and many times as many notable places within walking distance. For families it is clearer still: far more attractions and park space near the centre, plus 2 theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

Neither is a sea-swimming destination. Como has 8 beaches nearby and Munich 6, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water alone is not a reason to pick either.

The remaining close ground is weather, cost and countryside. Both have cold winters and no month as dry as 40mm or less, both sit within reach of protected land, and the national daily budget estimates behind them are close, roughly €155-163.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Munich, with little argument. It has far more attractions and park space near the centre, 2 theme parks within reach, and many times as many museums for days when the rain sets in.

Eating out and staying out late: Munich again, with many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, though only about half its bars and clubs sit centrally.

Days spent outside the city: Como. 23% of the land around it is protected, 8 UNESCO-listed places are within day-trip reach, and summer highs of 27°C against Munich's 25°C suit time on the water.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, roughly €155 and €163, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. A lakeside town and a large city can each sit far from their country's average, in either direction, and that gap can easily be wider than the difference between the two national numbers.

Como's best-rated months are also its wettest, above 150mm through the summer, so the warm season is not a dry one. And a count of nearby beaches says nothing about the water: neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming means cold water whichever you choose.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best from June to September, with highs of 22-27°C, though those are also its wettest months, above 150mm in each. Its firmer edge is the cooler half of the year, when it runs about 3°C warmer than Munich.

Munich's window is April to September. It is cooler at the peak, 25°C in July, but markedly drier: about 56-78mm in the shoulder months against Como's 138-168mm, so shoulder days are less likely to be lost to rain.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
