Where they differ
Dresden has 22 beaches nearby against Frankfurt's 4, so summer swimming means lakes and rivers rather than a day's travel. Its kitchens cover a somewhat wider range of cuisines, even though the choice of restaurants near the centre is smaller.
Frankfurt has more of most other things within reach: far more places to drink, mostly central, about twice as much park space near the centre, and 28% of the surrounding land protected against 14% around Dresden, alongside 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1.
Where they are alike
Weather is the closest match: both run daytime highs of about 4-26°C across the year and follow the same seasonal shape, with close to 1,760 hours of sunshine each.
Neither is a swimming destination in the sea sense: no month reaches 21°C in the water, and any bathing is inland. Both also keep their drinking and nightlife close to the centre, so evenings are walkable in either.
