The verdict

Choose Dresden if you want the warmer and drier of the two, with more of the year usable outdoors, a wider range of kitchens and swimming water within reach; its highs reach 26°C in July.

Choose Munich if you are travelling with children or want long evenings out: far more attractions and park space near the centre, many more places to drink, and more to see on foot.

Where they differ

Dresden runs the warmer year, with highs of 4-26°C against Munich's 4-25°C, and it has four months at 40mm of rain or less where Munich has none. It has 22 beaches nearby against Munich's 6, and its restaurants cover a somewhat wider range of kitchens.

Munich has about three times as many places to drink and twice as many nightclubs, though only about half of them are central. It also has roughly three times as many attractions near the centre, twice as much park space, and twice as many notable places within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both are inland, and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more; the water on offer is lake and river, without a season of its own.

They are close on museums too: about as many in each, and 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach of both. Their surroundings are comparable, with 14% of the land protected around Dresden and 17% around Munich, and both sit at the same national price level.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Munich. It has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre and twice as much park space, and both cities have 2 theme parks within reach.

Out for food and evenings: Munich again, with about three times as many restaurants and drinking places near the centre and twice as many nightclubs, though Dresden's sit closer together and its kitchens are more varied.

Warm-weather walkers: Dresden. Highs reach 26°C in July, four months fall to 40mm of rain or less, and 22 beaches lie within reach for lake and river swimming.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €163 daily budget sits beside it as one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Neither is the cheaper trip on this evidence.

Dresden's 22 beaches are inland water, and neither city has a month of sea warmth, so swimming depends entirely on the weather. That points at June to August, which is also when rainfall peaks in both, so the warmest months and the driest ones never coincide.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Dresden: 1991-2020 normals, Dresden-Strehlen (3.8 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Dresden is at its best from June to August, with highs of 24-26°C. Its drier stretch comes earlier, when February to April sit at 31-36mm, so spring walking is a fairer bet than in Munich, where no month drops to 40mm or less.

Munich's warm window is July and August at 25°C, though those are also its wettest, near 119mm. September is the more comfortable pick, at 20°C and 78mm, when the crowds and the rain both ease.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
