Choose Edinburgh if the trip is built around the city itself: museums and heritage, a wide choice of places to eat, and most of the notable sights within walking distance, with plenty to keep children occupied.

Where they differ

Edinburgh has many times as many attractions near the centre and three times the park space, which helps with children. Its notable places sit within walking distance of one another, it has many times as many museums, and 3 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach. Nightlife is on another scale, with many times more bars and clubs, most of them central.

Galway is the stronger base for nature and day trips: the sea is 1km from the centre against 3km, and days run warmer year-round, 9-20°C against 7-19°C.

Where they are alike

Neither city offers settled weather, and both stay in a narrow band: Galway 9-20°C across the year, Edinburgh 7-19°C. Summers are mild rather than hot, winters rarely severe, and rain falls in every month in both.

Both sit on the water and both have beaches within reach, 20 near Edinburgh and 13 near Galway. Neither, though, has a month with the sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is short and bracing rather than a day's plan.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries a daily budget for Galway, about €187 a day, and none at all for Edinburgh, so nothing on this page tells you which trip is the more expensive. The value ranking rests on a different measure, not on what you would spend.

The coastal figures flatter both. Beaches nearby and a short walk to the water do not mean swimming: the sea tops out at 14°C in Edinburgh and 16°C in Galway. And the warmest months are not the driest, Galway's August carries 89mm, so the best-ranked months still come with rain.

Galway is warmer month for month but much wetter. May and June are its best balance, 16-19°C with 63-72mm. Winter is where the two part: Galway's wettest months reach 100-113mm, so a mild January there is not a dry one.
