The verdict
Choose Edinburgh if you want a walkable trip, with the sights, museums and family attractions packed close to the centre and the sea only 3km away.
Choose Manchester if warmth matters more to you than heritage: summer days reach about 21°C, there are theme parks within reach, and far more protected land around the city for days out.

Where they differ
Edinburgh is the easier city to see on foot: about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, many more attractions aimed at children, and about three times as much park space near by. It also holds more museums. The sea is 3km out, with 20 beaches near by against Manchester's 10.
Manchester has 2 theme parks within reach where Edinburgh has none, and a far larger share of protected land around the city for days out, though its sea is 27km from the centre.
Where they are alike
Neither is a base for wild country. They are near-matched for days out, and reach that in different ways: Edinburgh with parks near the centre, Manchester with open land further off.
Eating and drinking sit close to level: plenty of restaurants near the centre in both, a similar range of kitchens, and bars and clubs clustered centrally. The weather is similar too, highs of 7-19°C in Edinburgh and 7-21°C in Manchester, with no month at 40mm of rain or less.
Which traveller are you?
Families with young children: Edinburgh. Attractions near the centre far outnumber Manchester's, there is about three times the park space, and the sea sits 3km out. Manchester's counter is 2 theme parks within reach.
Museum-goers and city walkers: Edinburgh again. More museums, held tightly around the centre, and about twice as much of note within walking distance, so a weekend needs little transport.
Anyone travelling for nights out and meals: close to a coin toss. Manchester has more nightclubs, Edinburgh more places to drink and somewhat more restaurants. In both, the centre holds most of them.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison here carries no information. Both cities take the same national price level, so that figure is identical by construction, and the dataset holds no daily budget for either. Treat cost as unknown and check it yourself; nothing here shows one to be cheaper than the other.
Edinburgh's coastal showing needs reading carefully: 20 beaches and the sea 3km from the centre, but the water peaks at 14°C and neither city has a month at 21°C or more, so this is coastline for walking rather than swimming. The warmest months are not the driest, either.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Edinburgh: 1991-2020 normals, Edinburgh Airport (10 km from centre). Manchester: 1991-2020 normals, Manchester Airport (14.8 km from centre).
Edinburgh suits May to September, with highs of 14-19°C, and it has the drier spring of the two: April brings 43mm against Manchester's 61mm. It is also the steadier choice in late autumn, when Manchester turns markedly wetter.
Manchester is the better bet at the height of summer, warmer through the middle of the year, peaking near 21°C in July with the sea reaching 17°C. Autumn is the trade-off: October brings 95mm against Edinburgh's 80mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
