Where they differ

Florence has many times as many museums as Monaco, clustered tightly around the centre, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach. It also has many times as many restaurants near the centre, and many times as many bars and nightclubs, so evenings have somewhere to go.

Monaco is the one with a coast: 50 beaches nearby and four months of sea at 21°C or more. Its surroundings are greener too, with 24% of the land protected against 9% around Florence, and 3 theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

Neither city has a difficult year. Florence swings wider, 11-33°C across the year against Monaco's 13-28°C, but both are mild in winter and hot in high summer, and both have a run of dry months around midsummer.

Both are also walkable: the notable places sit within walking distance of the centre in each, so you can cover a lot on foot. And both have protected country within reach of the city for a day out.

Which traveller are you?

If you are travelling for museums and old streets, Florence: many times as many museums as Monaco, clustered close together, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and about twice as many notable buildings within walking distance of the centre.

If the point of the trip is swimming, Monaco: 50 beaches nearby and a sea that holds 21°C or more for four months, where Florence has no coast at all.

Families split the difference. Monaco has 3 theme parks within reach, but Florence has roughly twice as many attractions near the centre and far more park space to break the day up.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Florence, about €155, and nothing of the kind for Monaco, where value for money is not measured at all. Whatever you decide about the two, price cannot be part of it on this evidence.

The beach picture is seasonal. Monaco's sea is at 21°C or above for four months, and near 13-15°C for much of the rest of the year, so the coast counts for less outside high summer. Those warm months are also the driest, while the wettest stretch follows immediately after in both cities, which shifts what a shoulder-season trip looks like.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Florence: 1995-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Firenze / Peretola (5.6 km from centre). Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Florence is at its best in May and June, when highs run 24-29°C and rain falls back to 41mm. Midsummer hits 33°C with no sea to cool off in, and from September the rain returns hard, above 100mm a month through late autumn.

Monaco is the better pick in July and August, with highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C and 13-18mm of rain, the driest stretch either city gets. Winters there are mild rather than warm, and the same wet autumn arrives.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
