Where they differ
Frankfurt has many times as many bars and clubs as Maastricht, most of them near the centre, so evenings offer more choice. It also has many more notable places within walking distance of the centre, more park space near it, and 28% of the surrounding land protected against Maastricht's 19%.
Maastricht's advantages lie beyond the city: 5 theme parks within reach against Frankfurt's 2, and 5 UNESCO-listed places in day-trip range against 4. It is also the smaller, quieter place by a wide margin.
Where they are alike

What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €163 and €181, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Frankfurt or Maastricht. A large financial city, or a heavily visited small one, can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat them as background rather than a reason to pick either.
The warmest months are also among the wettest: Maastricht's August is its rainiest at 84mm, and Frankfurt's summer rain runs above its spring. A high summer month in either city means warmth with showers, not dry heat.
