The verdict

Choose Frankfurt if what surrounds the city matters as much as the city itself: much more protected land within reach and 4 UNESCO-listed places on day trips against Prague's 1, with slightly warmer days through the year.

Choose Prague if you want to walk to everything: about twice as many notable places within reach of the centre, twice as many museums and bars, and restaurants clustered close in.

Where they differ

Frankfurt's advantage lies outside the centre: 28% of the land around it is protected against 12% around Prague, and 4 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against Prague's 1.

Prague keeps its interest in the middle. About twice as many notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and there are roughly twice as many bars and twice as many nightclubs, most of them close in. Restaurants and museums near the centre are also about twice as numerous, so evenings need little planning.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Prague counts 7 beaches nearby and Frankfurt 4, all inland, and neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so swimming is not a reason to pick either.

Their weather runs close: July highs of 25-26°C, January highs of 2-5°C, and almost the same annual sunshine. Both hold a substantial museum offering and a similar range of kitchens, so the choice does not turn on either.

Which traveller are you?

Someone after nights out and a dense core should take Prague: roughly twice as many bars and clubs as Frankfurt, most near the centre, with the notable sights packed tightly enough to walk between.

Families lean the same way: more attractions and more park space near the centre, and 3 theme parks within reach against Frankfurt's 2, though both cities suit families comfortably.

Walkers and day-trippers should choose Frankfurt: 28% of the land around it is protected against 12% around Prague, and 4 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip range, with slightly warmer days for being outdoors.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget of €163 for Frankfurt's country and €107 for Prague's is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, not a measurement of either city. Capitals and heavily visited cities can sit further from their own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so treat the gap as background rather than as a guide to what your trip will cost.

Prague's dry months are its cold ones: the stretch at or below 40mm falls mostly outside summer, when highs sit at 2-9°C, while the warm months bring the heaviest rain of its year.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre). Prague: 1991-2020 normals, Praha-Libus (8.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Frankfurt is the more dependable warm-weather pick from May to September, when highs run 21-26°C; rain is steady rather than seasonal, around 50-62mm at the edges of that window and heavier at midsummer.

Prague's warmest months are also its wettest, near 80mm at midsummer, so its clearer windows sit either side: April brings about 27mm with highs of 16°C, September about 44mm at 20°C. Winter is the driest part of its year, though too cold to spend outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
