Where they differ
Galway is the outdoor side of this pair. The sea is 1km from the centre against 3km in Glasgow, with 13 beaches nearby to Glasgow's 3, and more park space close in. It also runs warmer through the year, 9-20°C against 7-19°C.
Glasgow is the denser city: many times as many bars and nightclubs, many times as many restaurants near the centre with a somewhat wider range of kitchens, many times as many notable places within walking distance, and 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
The two land in much the same place on value for money, so that axis is unlikely to decide between them; what you want to do with the days will.
Weather and swimming sit close too. July is the warmest month in both and the sea is at its best in August, and no month in either falls to 40mm of rain or less. Both are cool coastal cities where a swim is short and a jacket travels year-round.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone whose trip is built around evenings and eating should take Glasgow: many times as many bars, nightclubs and restaurants near the centre, and a somewhat wider range of kitchens than Galway offers.
Families with children will find more to fill days in Glasgow, with about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 1 theme park within reach; Galway counters with more park space and beaches close by.
Walkers and swimmers should pick Galway, where the sea is 1km from the centre, 13 beaches sit nearby and the daytime highs run warmer across the year than Glasgow's.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries a daily budget for Galway, about €187 a day, and nothing equivalent for Glasgow, so the value-for-money reading rests on a different measure that both cities do have. Treat it as a rough ranking, not as a statement about what a trip will cost.
Warm does not mean dry in either city. Rainfall rises through the summer in both, so the months that look best on temperature are not the ones with the least rain, and a beach-heavy coast sits beside water that never reaches 21°C at any point in the year.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Galway: 1991-2020 normals, Shannon Airport (64.2 km from centre). Glasgow: 1991-2020 normals, Glasgow Airport (11.5 km from centre).
Galway is the steadier choice from May to August, when highs run 16-20°C and the driest stretch, April and May, brings 63mm. Autumn stays usable but wet.
Glasgow is at its best in July and August, with highs of 19°C, though those months carry 129-145mm of rain against roughly half that in Galway. Winter is the clearest split: Glasgow passes 200mm in December and January, while Galway sits near 100-113mm, so a short winter break reads very differently in each.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
