The verdict

Choose Geneva if the trip is mostly about what lies outside the city: more protected land within reach, lake beaches, and warmer summers, up to 27°C in July.

Choose Munich if you want the city itself to carry the trip: about twice as many museums, twice as many bars and clubs, and far more to walk between in the centre.

Where they differ

Geneva is the better base for leaving the city: 27% of the surrounding land is protected against 17% around Munich, 2 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against 1, and there are 43 lake beaches nearby against 6. Its drinking spots are fewer, but most of them are near the centre.

Munich has about twice as many museums, twice as many places to drink and twice as many nightclubs, roughly three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, and about twice as many notable places within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Neither is a sea destination: neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is freshwater and tied to the warmest weeks.

Eating out is close to level, Munich with somewhat more restaurants near the centre, both covering a similar range of kitchens. The weather runs in parallel too, Geneva at 5-27°C across the year against Munich's 4-25°C, and neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less.

Which traveller are you?

Someone planning day trips and time outdoors should take Geneva: more of the surrounding land is protected, 27% against 17%, and there are 2 UNESCO-listed places within reach against 1, plus lake beaches for warm-weather swimming.

A couple after museums and long evenings out will get more from Munich, with about twice as many museums, twice as many bars and twice as many clubs, and more notable places packed within walking distance of the centre.

Families lean to Munich as well: about three times as many attractions near the centre, similar park space to Geneva and 2 theme parks within reach of either, so the difference is what sits on your doorstep.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 for Switzerland and €163 for Germany, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so neither tells you what a stay in Geneva or Munich costs.

Munich's warmest months are also its wettest, at 107-121mm, while Geneva's summer stays drier and its heaviest rain comes in autumn. And Geneva's 43 beaches are lake beaches, usable only in the warm weeks rather than year-round.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Geneva: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (5.7 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Geneva is the stronger summer choice. June to August brings highs of 24-27°C with 77-81mm of rain, while Munich over the same months is cooler and much wetter, at 107-121mm.

Munich reads better either side of that. September and October are drier there, 78mm and 67mm against Geneva's 87mm and 94mm, and its winter months carry less rain as well, though highs sit at 4-6°C and neither city gives you much reason to come then.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
